đź’Ş POWERLIFTING MAKES ITS DEBUT! đź’Ş

Today, we officially introduced Powerlifting to the Alabama Senior Olympics—and what an incredible debut it was!

From first-time competitors to experienced lifters, our athletes brought the energy, determination, and strength to the platform. Watching each lift—from squat to bench to deadlift—was a powerful reminder that strength truly has no age limit.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this first year a success, especially our directors Naomi and Lindsey at CrossFit Shades and all of our dedicated athletes who stepped up to be part of something new.

This is just the beginning for Powerlifting at A*O—and we can’t wait to see it grow in the years ahead! 💥

Be sure to check out NSGA’s story of Alabama’s James (Barry) Putman!

On World Table Tennis Day, we’re celebrating an incredible full-circle moment 50 years in the making. 🏓

Last summer, National Senior Games athlete Barry Putnam was scanning the list of competitors for the upcoming tournament in Des Moines when one name stopped him in his tracks — Joe Brazil.

Could it be the same Joe Brazil he hadn’t seen in decades?

Barry met Joe in a base rec room in 1975 while they were serving in the U.S. Air Force. Joe introduced him to the sport of Table Tennis and helped him hone his skills.

When the local Table Tennis club Joe founded hosted their inaugural tournament the following year, Barry entered. The two ended up facing each other in the championship match, and that day - Barry took home the trophy.

Life moved on, and the two lost touch…until Senior Games brought them back together. Barry dug out that 1976 trophy and brought it to Des Moines to surprise Joe, who recognized him instantly!

Barry relished the opportunity to thank Joe for bringing him into the sport. They took this priceless photo to commemorate the reunion and have stayed in touch since.

Shoutout to Donna Angarano!

We want to take a moment to recognize someone who truly goes above and beyond for the Alabama Senior Olympics—Donna Angarano.

Donna has spent countless hours behind the scenes making our Pickleball tournament a success. From manually entering every player into the tournament software, to verifying DUPR ratings, contacting players for corrections, and handling last-minute changes, and more, her attention to detail and dedication is unmatched.

And if that wasn’t enough—she worked tirelessly all three days of the tournament while also competing herself in women’s doubles! 💪

Donna is incredibly intelligent, extremely patient, and an absolute cornerstone of this event. Quite simply… we don’t know what we would do without her.

Thank you, Donna, for everything you do for our athletes and our program! 👏💙
