Home Craft Days The rich musical and cultural heritage of Southwest Virginia make this region a focal point of the Appalachian culture.

From its beginning, Mountain Empire Community College recognized the importance of preserving and promoting the unique art and music of the region. In 1972, the first celebration of mountain culture was realized with the establishment of Home Craft Days. Since that time, the festival has been an integral part of Mountain Empire Community College’s longstanding commitment to serve our community. Now celebrating its 42nd year, MECC’s Home Craft Days features musicians and artisans from throughout Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee, and Eastern Kentucky. Demonstrations of weaving, pottery making, grist milling, wood crafting, basket weaving, broom making, quilting, tatting and much more are offered, along with musical performances throughout the three- day event. The 2013 Home Craft Days celebration will be held October 18-20 on the campus of Mountain Empire Community College. ⚒️ Vendor Spotlight: Smoking Bear Forge 🧺

For more than three decades, Mark Ramsey of Big Stone Gap has been a treasured part of the Home Craft Days tradition, sharing the skills, stories, and craftsmanship of Appalachia with festival visitors.

As a traditional blacksmith, Mark preserves and demonstrates ironworking techniques that were once essential to life in our mountain communities. Watching him work at the forge offers a rare glimpse into the artistry and skill of generations past.

Mark is also a talented basket maker, crafting baskets from tulip poplar bark using methods passed down to early mountain settlers through Cherokee traditions. Each basket is created by hand during the late spring and summer months when the bark can be carefully harvested and worked.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to see Mark's shaving horse, a traditional woodworking tool used to shape wood with an axe and drawknife, demonstrating another important piece of Appalachian heritage.
