Hey All,
I just spent close to an hour on the phone with one of the head ND fisheries biologists for NDGF. The recommendation he gave for catching fish in deep water may actually shock you.

He stated their preference was that if you are fishing in deep water (greater than 30') regardless of what size you catch, you keep it. He said that walleye seldom survive being pulled from deep water. He said perch are even worse 25'+/-. Even if they swim back down. They suffer substantial internal damage.

That goes to confirm our point regarding catch, photo, release tournament programs during late season, deep water fishing.

NDGF biologists are unable to net any fish that exceeds 25 inches so they cannot accurately determine whether or not there is any type of reduction in large fish population. They believe it is currently opposite, and that the larger fish are increasing in numbers.

We also spoke about forward facing sonar and the targeting of large fish.
They stated that tournament fishing as a whole is a drop in the bucket in overall catches throughout the year. They do not believe that there is any impact whatsoever from large fish being harvested out of the lake.

The general consensus from the biologist was that not only do our tournaments have little to no impact on the fishery, but forward facing sonar does not create a sizable enough impact where they are concerned. It also goes to show that catch record and release programs during late season deep water tournament fishing results in more harm than actual good because the fish are not being harvested for disenfranchised community members being able to eat the food.

Just something to think about when talking about our catch/harvest tournament practices.

NEW for this year. Two 100% optional divisions. In order to ease the concerns of a few guys who don't like to compete against heavily outfitted boats, we developed separate divisions.

Optional NON forward-facing sonar division - $100.00 entry
Optional Unlimited electronics Forward Facing Sonar division - $150.00

These divisions have their own pay line, leaderboard, and weight tracking. They are IN ADDITION to the main tournament.

Last week we posted that our email had been hacked. We wanted to make a quick announcement because the email that was being sent had a downloadable link. We were literally boarding a flight out of the country when we saw the information come over, so we decided to get the info out as quickly as possible. For clarification our Dakota walleye classic email was not hacked. It was another email account of ours with the hosting service. Nothing was compromised with the DWC.

We are extremely excited to recognize Ms. Elena Sorge as the DWC's first recipient of the "Dakota Walleye Classic Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Scholarship"

Elena is an honor student from Center-Stanton high school, where she graduated at the top of her class. She is attending UND this fall with a double major in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology.
We were honored to be able to meet with director Jeb Williams with the North Dakota Game and Fish in order for her to get some words of advice from the director himself.

On behalf of the Dakota Walleye Classic, we want to wish Elena unlimited success as she moves on to the the next chapter of her career!!

Anglers, due to wind storm rhat blew through last night, our entire venue was destroyed. We are currently attempting to do some cleanup, but it's going to take a while. As soon as we are done we will finalize the drawings for the HUB gift card and a few others. If anyone is in the area and is willing to lend a hand, we would very much appreciate it, as it is just a Jen and I with a couple family members.
