โIt was Woodstock elders Duke Devlin, Charlie Maloney, and Bobbi and I who would sit at the monument. I would pack a cooler with sandwiches and drinks, because we would go up there at 10 a.m., and wouldnโt leave until like 3.
When youโre on the hill and look out over the field, that was empty in 1969. You had Filippini Pond in the back, it was absolutely beautiful. And when people got to Woodstock, they felt this was a peaceful setting. It's like a Garden of Eden.
Now at Bethel Woods, I watch people coming on a Friday or Saturday, and theyโre white-knuckled when they get out of the car. But it's immediate relief, opening that door and putting your foot on the ground, and you're at the original site, and it's like decompression time. They smile and everything changes.
I give tours to artists who have never been there. Michael McDonald was very gracious and friendly. I gave tours to Kidz Bop. I found that the younger bands are in awe of going to this place, the sacred ground, and want to hear the stories.
At Woodstockโs 50th anniversary, we had lines of 100 people to see us. We had to get a box of tissues, some of the women on line were crying because they wanted to see Bobbi and me. I was like, โOh, no. You don't have to cry, come over here. Give me a hug.โ It was surreal.
The other day, I drove to the dog groomer on a back road. I pull up to a stop sign and I look to the left, but I don't really stop. To my right, there's a cop, and it's too late because I've already rolled through the stop sign. So he pulls me over: โlicense, registration.โ I happened to mention, โThe chief's a friend of mine.โ So he walked back to the car and 2, 3 minutes later, he brings me back my license and registration. The first words out of his mouth are, โYou're famous, man!โ"
