Join BAMPFA on September 26 for the free Georgian Cinema Now Symposium: "Activism in Authoritarian Times: The Republic of Georgia as a Case Study" 🎬🇬🇪
This daylong symposium brings together journalists, cultural historians, teachers, activists, and independent filmmakers to explore Georgia’s current political and cultural landscape and the challenges facing artists and media professionals working under increasing government pressure.
The program features two panels—“Modern Georgia’s Political History” and “Reports from the Field by Georgian Independent Filmmakers”—along with screenings of two recent documentaries, LAWYER BEHIND THE WHEEL and A REVIEW LESSON. Speakers will discuss Georgia’s political history, censorship, academic freedom, independent filmmaking, and the experiences of artists working to protect freedom of expression and LGBTQ+ rights.
The symposium is presented as part of “Georgian Cinema Now: Part 1,” BAMPFA’s yearlong exploration of contemporary Georgian cinema.
🎟️ This event is free and open to the public! Come by anytime between 11:30 AM–5 PM.
Copresented by the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, UC Berkeley
