Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival

Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival Eat Chocolate! Make Chalk Art! MAKE ART! With no fees to artists, areas of sidewalk are assigned for you to create your own fanciful chalk drawings. EAT CHOCOLATE!

The sidewalks along Shattuck and Cedar streets in North Berkeley are the target of artists young and old, professional and greenhorn during the 23rd CHOCOLATE & CHALK ART FESTIVAL on Saturday, August 13, 10AM-5PM. The theme for this year is “Chalking Beautiful Music.” Families or groups may work together, artists may work alone, but everyone comes away with a sense of pride in their work for all t

o see. First 10 to pre-register online at Eventbrite get a free box of chalk. Otherwise, register in person on Saturday, August 13 at the event booths at 1495 or 1607 Shattuck Ave. where a box of colorful artist's chalk is available for $10/$20 cash. Help yourself to gloves, charcoal, and kneeling cardboard (please return). Artwork may be as small as 2' square and up to 6' x 3' but please leave room for pedestrians and do not draw directly in doorways or driveways. Best if drawn up against the building or near the curb. We want your work to stay in place for as long as possible. Please only draw at your assigned area as there are businesses that don't want chalk on their sidewalks. A CHALK ART CONTEST for the best drawing will be judged after 4PM. Top three winners will receive cash prizes ($150/$100/$50). Ten runners up get a $25 gift certificate from Books, Inc. Winners will be notified by Wednesday after the event. See prior winners here. Buy tasting tickets from the event booths at 1451, 1495 or 1607 Shattuck Ave. on the day of the event or in advance on EventBrite. Tickets are $1/ea. or 20/$20. Use them in the businesses listed for items on the Chocolate Menu which are available during the hours listed and only while supplies last. Items may be substituted. All items are sold 'to-go' only. RAFFLE! You may drop your leftover tickets in the raffle jars at any ticket booth. (Sorry, no refunds.) Print your email on the back. Raffle prizes include items from local businesses. Prizes will be mailed after the event. STREET FESTIVAL! Shop and have fun at vendor booths. Crafts, kid’s activities, food trucks, beer, wine and musicians fill the blocks between Rose and Vine Streets. This is a family-friendly, free event produced by Another Bullwinkel Show and sponsored by the North Shattuck Association, City of Berkeley Civic Arts, and Books, Inc.

WINNERS OF BERKELEY’S CHOCOLATE & CHALK ART FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Jacquelyn Klinger & Stefan Voge who chalked their way into First-Place at the Chalk Art Contest during the Chocolate and Chalk Art Festival in No. Berkeley on Father’s Day weekend. They created a beautiful Medusa-like goddess emanating light from her torso entitled, Light Within.

The Second-Place winner was Sam Spevack’s Violin #2, from which one could almost hear musical color emanating from the concrete.

An artist from the ACCI Gallery, Victoria Bloedau, came in Third with a thematic work entitled, Know Your Cocoa. Eleven other works were included as Runner’s Up, 37 additional works of chalk art were awarded Honorable Mentions, and 28 young participants were given Youth Mentions. Photos of all the artwork may be viewed at https://www.anotherbullwinkelshow.com/chalk-art-2021/

Winners took home cash prizes courtesy of Safeway and a grant from the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission while the runners up were awarded gift cards from Books Inc. or Love at First Bite.

Festival attendees sampled delicious chocolate morsels in the existing businesses they strolled through the district enjoying the original chalk art.

Sponsored by the North Shattuck Association and produced by Another Bullwinkel Show, the event is now in its 22nd year.
