Did you know that, 120 years ago, the ampere was generally defined as “the current that would electrically deposit a small amount of silver on a negatively charged surface using a device known as a silver voltmeter”? Doesn’t sound very precise. Things have changed since then, including the size of the ampere, not to mention the way it’s defined and measured.

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded 120 years ago today, known then as the National Bureau of Standards. One of its many purposes is to develop ever better ways to measure things.

The link below will take you to an article from the NIST that describes how some things were measured way back then, like the ampere, the volt and the second; and how they’re measured today.

A lot has changed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the past 120 years.
