2026 SETVA Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient: Benjamin “Ben” Collins Sr.
The Southeast Texas Visionary Awards is honored to announce that the recipient of the 2026 SETVA Lifetime Achievement Award is Benjamin “Ben” Collins Sr.
Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, Judge Collins has dedicated more than four decades of his life to serving, protecting, and uplifting the people of Southeast Texas. His remarkable journey is one defined by integrity, leadership, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to his community.
After graduating from Hebert High School in 1978 and earning a degree in Criminal Justice from Lamar University, Collins began his law enforcement career with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in 1981. Through hard work and dedication, he rose through the ranks, serving as a Deputy Sheriff, Lieutenant, D.W.I. Task Force Officer, Fugitive Warrant Officer, Undercover Narcotics Officer, and Field Training Officer.
His commitment to public service continued for more than two decades within the Jefferson County Constable's Office, where he served as Deputy Constable, Lieutenant, and Chief Deputy Constable before retiring in 2012. Even retirement could not keep him away from serving others, and he returned to law enforcement to continue making a difference in the lives of those around him.
In 2019, Judge Collins made history by becoming the first African American elected as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, Place 2 in Jefferson County, serving the north and west areas of Beaumont with distinction and honor.
Throughout his career, Judge Collins has witnessed some of life's most difficult moments. From responding to crime scenes to helping families navigate tragedy and loss, he has carried responsibilities that many could never imagine. Yet despite the weight of those experiences, he made a conscious decision to be a source of hope, encouragement, and joy within his community.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful reflections of his character is his love for bringing people together. While many know him for his service in law enforcement and public office, countless families know him as the judge who proudly officiated their wedding ceremonies. Judge Collins often says he loves seeing people happy and believes in bringing people together through love, unity, and commitment.
His life serves as a powerful reminder that leadership is not simply about authority—it is about service. It is about showing up for people, encouraging others, mentoring future generations, and leaving a legacy that continues to impact lives long after the work is done.
Tonight, we celebrate a man whose lifetime of service has strengthened Southeast Texas and inspired countless individuals along the way.
