Lionseed Bookstore & Learning Commons New and gently used books, puzzles, games, activities, events, space rental, Barton Reading Tutoring & Executive Function Skills Coaching.

The Lionseed is a bookstore, learning commons and event venue open year-round and located in beautiful Battle Lake, Minnesota. We offer a great selection of gently used books, games and puzzles. Additionally, we offer Barton reading tutoring, executive function skills coaching, academic/career coaching services and PACER-informed resources and assistance for families of children with disabilities.

Tending Windmills, LLC (TWL) is our parent company focused on serving our local communities through creative educational and community-building endeavors. TWL was founded by owner/executive director Kristin Sawyer Lyman in 2017. We began by offering Barton Reading & Spelling tutoring for students with dyslexia and quickly expanded to include Executive Function Skills Coaching and Academic/Career Coaching services for neurodiverse K-12, post-secondary and graduate students. In 2020, Kristin was selected to become a PACER Parent Leader, which provided her with invaluable training to become a strong advocate and resource for students with disabilities.

🏠 I swear “a house was blocking the highway” sounds like the rural Minnesota version of “my dog ate my homework”…

But this morning it was actually true. 😆

A house being moved down Highway 78 had me parked on the side of the road, so the bookstore opened a little late today.

I ❤️ rural life.

Summer is wonderful… and also approximately 73 days of hearing “I’m boooored.” 😆

Tomorrow I’m putting a whole bunch of kids’ workbooks, easy readers, learning activities, and homeschool-friendly resources into the clearance bin for just 50¢ each.

Perfect for rainy days, road trips, quiet time, brushing up on skills, or helping prevent a little summer slide without making it feel like school.

The stack on the left is a sample from my ever-growing TBR pile (to be read).

The stack on the right is a handful of books I read this winter and absolutely loved.

The problem is that every time I finish a few books, I seem to bring home a few more. 😊

Some of my favorite books for reluctant readers just arrived back in stock. 🎣📚

Kevin Lovegreen’s Minnesota-written hunting & fishing adventure books have been a HUGE hit — especially with kids who don’t usually get excited about reading.

High-interest stories, approachable reading level, and perfect for summer cabin/lake reading.

Ages 7–12-ish, but especially great for those “I hate reading” kids who just haven’t found the right book yet. 😉
