Womanly Words: Poetry from a Female Perspective Women poets/spoken word artists "changing ourselves and others with our words" at our bi-monthly poetry/spoken word series Come out and see for yourself!

Womanly Words: Poetry with a Female Perspective™ launched in the summer of 2013 by poet/author, Sylvia Chatman aka Sincere Scribe™. It is a bimonthly poetry and spoken word series featuring female poets from Greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the surrounding areas. These women gather to express creatively their thoughts and feelings on a variety of topics by reading and reciting their original wri

tings. The featured poets/spoken word artists range in age from late teens to 50 plus and in experience from new to veteran, but all prove highly skilled in their craft. Some even have already published books and spoken word CD albums. These ladies provide an engaging, enriching, and entertaining experience for the audience. Being in their presence will change your outlook about poetry/spoken word as well as many other issues.

Happy Martin Luther King Day! Have you ever wondered what Martin Luther King thought about women? He recognized woman as more valuable than just 'breeding machines.'

"A final consideration is that women must be considered as more than “breeding machines.” It is true that the primary obligation of the woman is that of motherhood, but an intelligent mother wants it to be a responsible motherhood—a motherhood to which she has given her consent, not a motherhood due to impulse and to chance." ~Martin Luther King, Jr., Ebony Magazine, 1957

Question: We have seven children and another one is on the way. Our four-room apartment is bursting at the seams and living space in Harlem is at a premium. I have suggested to my husband that we practice birth control, but he says that when God thinks we have enough children, He will put a stop to....

Women, let's support one of our own. Lyn Hakeem has supported Womanly Words: Poetry from a Female Perspective in the past and present. Now, we congratulate Lyn as a contributing author in Louisiana Short Stories: An Anthology from America's Most Storied State. May we attend the book signing and/or buy a copy of the book on Lyn's behalf.

East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library is hosting a book signing Feb. 11 from 2-4 p.m. for Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s just released Louisiana Short Stories: An Anthology from America’s Most Storied State. The book was the culmination of ACGBR’s fall Creative Aging Writers’ Workshop, facilitated by award-winning author Rannah Gray.

The Louisiana-based short stories reflect the culture and resiliency of the state and its people written by the 20 participants, all age 55 and older. The diverse group was a mixture of previous workshop participants and first-timers and included six PhDs.

“Twenty writers with distinct and prolific life experiences came together to create this collection … Their lives, families and treasured memories have inspired them to write stories both moving and entertaining,” said Gray in the book’s introduction.

Not only did the participants write the stories, but they did the initial editing of the stories, selected the artwork and came up with book title. The final edits were made by Gray and ACGBR Director of Communications Pam Bordelon, who was also a workshop participant. The cover photograph was taken by workshop participant Rick LeCompte.

“These Writer’s Workshops, of which there have been four to date, are part of a Creative Aging initiative which endeavors to be part of a growing, intentional shift away from the passive entertainment traditionally offered to older adults, and toward programs that inspire vital creative practices,” said ACGBR President/CEO Renée Chatelain.

Copies of the book will be available at the library event. They are also available on Amazon. Proceeds benefit the Arts Council, which provides resources and support to artists and arts organizations in an 11-parish area that includes Ascension, East and West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupée, St. Helena, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.
