Santa Sprint trophy reveal!

Any race director can tell you that one of the hardest parts of directing these events is collecting enough sponsorship money to make the event feasible. In a small town like Barnesville, everyone is super generous and giving. Barnesville businesses give to so many causes, charities, functions, that they can’t actually give to EVERYONE; otherwise, they wouldn’t be in business. Completely understandable. Unfortunately, it makes it harder & harder for some events, particularly at the end of the year, to consistently get the working capital it needs to complete it’s mission. In our case, it’s to help needy children at Christmas all the while not sacrificing the quality of our event. Obviously we want to thank our Title Sponsor, Lorri Grisell at Allstate Insurance in Bethlehem, a returning Sponsor, Ferrum Fitness of Barnesville, a new Sponsor, WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital. In return to these and other donors/sponsors, we try to promote them in as many ways as their sponsorship level dictates: logos on prime spots on hundreds of shirts, thousands of applications, banners, mentions in radio interviews, etc. in addition to the Sponsors listed above, we wanted to take the time to mention another brand new Major Sponsor. Through a mutual friend, they heard we were an event in need, that donations were down, the number of children we are buying for are up and they offered to help. Shirts had already been printed, applications long ago sent out, radio ads already playing, too late to make them up a banner. So there really was no business advertising “deal” to be made. But they donated just the same. So a big Thank You going out to Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration for becoming a part of our event!

I am terribly saddened to announce the passing of Don Slusser. Don is an absolute legend all over the Ohio Valley, western Pennsylvania, the tri-state area, and beyond. Don completed hundreds of marathons, literally. He was heavily involved in the Running, Walking, and Racing Community. He was a significant part of the Pittsburgh Marathon, particularly in its early days. He ran The Great Race as a seeded Runner every single year they had it. He logged over 300,000 lifetime running miles and was approaching 100,000 racewalk miles. He was one of the region's most elite runners in his early days and as a Master's runner. He was also one of the most premier Racewalkers around. He has participated in thousands of road races. He was a longtime Race Director, most recently of the free premier Gateway Mile in Monroeville. Don had multiple knee surgeries and replacements over the years but never ever let it slow him down. Don and his wife Tammy were avid outdoorsmen who loved to camp, kayaking, bicycle, and hit every natural trail they could find all over the United States, often planning their adventures around destination races. Don was an inspiration and a mentor to countless numbers of Runners and Walkers of all abilities. He was a laid back, outgoing, friendly man who never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Don was a great supporter of my events and always had time for words of wisdom, encouragement, and advice. His passing creates a huge void that simply cannot be filled. Thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, family, and friends. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
