After riding out of America's giant corn maze that spanned Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio, we made it to Lake Erie via Huron (Not too far from Sandusky). We cruised along the lake shore up to a location that would put us at the foot of Cleveland, without actually staying in Cleveland (sorry but not sorry Cleveland fans).
The Bay Village Fire Department were willing to put us up on their concrete pad last night, to drop our trailers and allow us to commence our vagabonding. Our expert pathfinder, Lah, preferred something that wasn't a concrete jungle for three little boys to grow weary of. So despite the Fire Department's offer, she found us a site next to the playground at the park, and most importantly, the site offered us electricity.
The Bay Village Police Department caught wind of our arrival (Lah called them) and from the moment we rolled in to Lah's GPS location, we were greeted warmly by Officer Kitchen. At least two of us were, I think Matthew's corn banditry days were catching up with him, as he ended up in cuffs (see picture).
Several officers came by multiple times checking in and saying hi when they had the opportunity. They brought coffee and donuts. The gesture was heartfelt. The local PD in this community have endeared themselves into our memories from here out. Even as I write this Officer Fuchs showed up just now to present S.W.A.T. challenge coins for the kids, and refill our water supply. We feel our gratitude alone is insufficient. We've inadvertently stumbled upon an already well oiled machine of officers who not just serve their community by job, but by community service beyond their badge. These officers are representation that once you get 'Protect and Serve' in your blood and psyche, it doesn't turn off when you punch a clock.
Looking forward to getting through Cleveland today and setting ourselves up for a traipse through Niagara Falls, Canada side.
