KNIT LIKE A BARBARIAN ⚔️🧶

It’s not uncivilized to hold yarn with your left hand. We just did things differently. In this class we talk about picking vs wrapping. Norwegian vs. Continental vs. the Barbaric style 😁

Knitting should never be a controversy.

Right hand. Left hand. Throw. Wrap. Pick. There are plenty of ways to get yarn around a needle—and if your stitches are sound, your tension works and your project holds together, you’re knitting.

Knit Like a Barbarian is an introduction to Continental knitting, a method where the working yarn is held in the left hand and the stitches are “picked” rather than thrown.

But this class is about more than learning another knitting technique.

It’s about discovering how you work.

Fiber arts have always traveled between people, places and generations, changing a little in every pair of hands. Different doesn’t mean wrong. Different can be efficient, inventive, traditional—or simply more comfortable for you.

They weren’t uncivilized. They just did things differently.

And maybe you do, too.

You’re not weird. You’re interesting. 😁

Already knit another way? Come add another technique to your toolbox. Never knitted before? Barbarians welcome.

We’ll learn Continental knit and purl, yarn and hand position, tension, casting on, and how to recognize and fix common mistakes.

⚔️ No pillaging required.
🧶 Wool strongly encouraged.

Meet another one of our teachers Leslie Schoondergang Amick and, oh my, has she grown into a fine artist! We met four years ago at a Sewing convention. She has her own style. Leslie thinks outside of the box. And we’re just so pleased to have her as a part of our event.

A Viking sail began with sheep, spindles, looms, and an enormous amount of labor. Before a longship crossed an ocean, households had already spent months turning wool into the engine that moved it.
