Fresh bait beats frozen. 🎣

Bring a cast net and throw it through the night. Mullet and menhaden run the sloughs in October, and sand fleas dug from the wash are what the pompano want.

Keep it fresh all weekend and put something on the board.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE NORTH SIDE (CREEK SIDE) BALD HEAD WOODS RESERVE TRAIL - Due to an invasive yellow jacket nest, both entrances are closed for public safety. The south side of the trail remains open to the public. The Village’s Public Works Department is working to eradicate the nest. How it all started 🎣🌙

Fishing on Bald Head Island runs deep. Lee Pridgen of The Craftsmen Group learned it from his grandfather, Dr. Thad Wester, who started the Thad Wester Fishing School on the island decades ago.

In 2024, during a company weekend on BHI, the Craftsmen Group team finished Friday night dinner and headed to East Beach around 10 p.m. No moon, just complete darkness and a sky full of stars. They fished until 3 a.m. and caught more than 20 Red Drum.

That night became the inspiration for the tournament. In October 2025, the 1st Annual BHI Surf Fishing Tournament launched to benefit Kids Making It. Gale-force winds and hurricane-driven rain didn't make it easy, but a new island tradition was born.

Now we're back for year two: October 9–11, 2026. Come write the next chapter with us. 🏖️
