Big shout out to Nick Cutroneo for a wonderful concert last night. Very expressive playing, and an attentive audience. Of particular note was the informal talk about each piece and the personal anecdotes - helping the audience connect with the music. Very well done. Of particular note for me was the piece "Stagger Breathing" by Colin Britt.

A thoroughly enjoyable and interesting work depicting the technique of staggered breathing while simultaneously depicting the need of society to take breaks from the day to day news machine that seems to constantly challenge our understanding of right, wrong, moral, immoral, etc. A very effective piece played wonderfully by Nick.

Thanks for your support all. If you wish to be on our mailing list for Guitar events at CSUB - please email Jim Scully ([email protected]) with Guitar Arts in the subject. We unfortunately lost our email list over the last few months, and need to rebuild it!

Many thanks....

Today was a fun day.

Had the pleasure of hosting Nicholas Mycio at CSUB Music & Theatre today.

Nick and I played for my Beginning Guitar class, he coached our Jazz combos on improvisation on Birks’ Works and Footprints, and sat in with our big band and broke down the basics of improv on a Bb blues.

Thanks so much Nick. Sorry we didn’t get a picture! I’m terrible!

But, thanks for your work today. Had a blast, happy to host you and hope to do it again.

CSUB Music folks - I just discovered that one of our graduates, guitarist Todd Holliday - passed away unexpectedly in April.

He was a fun student. Earnest, smart, asked questions, didn’t take it all too seriously but worked hard to get better as a player and student. I loved having him in combos and big band. RIP, Todd.

Day 1 of year 22 at CSU Bakersfield.
Day 1 of year 26 teaching music in higher ed.

I barely recognize the gig today as compared to the time I started. The teaching is very similar - nearly everything else in the academic world is quite different.

Trying to put a Thomas Keller quote from "The Bear" into practice this year: "Everyday, just try to do a little bit better." That seems doable...and it's a good motivator.

Good luck fellow academics...the work we do in the classroom is invaluable in shaping the world into one we where we want to live and thrive.

Hey there! How’s it going last day of classes?

Thanks to Lovro Peretić for an amazing performance tonight. Just a stellar exhibition of musicianship, expression, and command of the instrument.

I’m always humbled by these guest artists. It’s just - as my son said after the concert - “on another level.”

Thanks for attending. Keep your eyes open here for more events coming up.

Also, follow CSUB Jazz for upcoming events by students of Jim Scully.

Thanks Bakersfiled.

He’s a snippet from tonight.
