Great start to our year of competition yesterday as 9 of our members attended the Keith Steinbeisser Memorial Livestock Judging competition in Sidney.

For several members, this was their first FFA contest, and first time judging livestock competitively. Despite that, in the FFA division, out of 40 competitors, Bainville had 5 of the top 6 individuals, leaving our teams in the first and second place spots.

Great job to Makinzie, Eleanor, Sophie, Blanca, AnnMarie, Kannan, Copeland, and especially to Carys (3rd), and Blythe (winner!) for a great showing.

Our animal science class recently completed a unit on animal behavior and livestock handling.

They got to put their learning into practice yesterday with a field trip to sort sheep (and a goat) in teams. Naturally, they selected guys vs. girls for groups.

While there, students used the flight zone, point of balance, and low-stress handling principles to move and separate small ruminants. As a bonus, we got to observe dominance hierarchies in action as some students took over as team leaders. 😂

Since Thursday was National Day, most of Mr. Standley’s classes tried to “break in” to Ag Education with a themed break-out box. Many of the groups completed the challenge, including a blazing time by the automation group. Honorable mention goes to the 7th grade class, where most groups would have finished if they had a full period instead of Friday’s shortened schedule.

A belated thank you to everyone who joined us for movie night in the park last month, and to all the individuals and organizations that helped make it possible.

We’re sorry the weather made us shut down early. To give away the ending, they made two sequels.

We definitely learned several lessons that will hopefully allow us to host an event like this again with even more success!

Yesterday, we held our September monthly meeting.

Before the meeting, our chapter officers put on a great interactive workshop on leadership skills for younger members.

Then the meeting itself had 40 people in attendance! We’re not positive, but we think that might be a Bainville record.

What a way to kick off the year!

At the meeting, we established practice times for CDEs, which will start next Tuesday.
