TONIGHT, you get to hear the Piano Quintet in C-minor written by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

FUN FACT: RVW wrote this during his early thirties when he wasn't YET the Vaughan Williams that we now know. He withdrew this from circulation in 1918 (a time of purging of his catalogue of several earlier works) but 50 years after his passing, his widow Ursula finally gave permission to perform and publish the piece.

Experience this late-romantic work and the premiere of Dan Racer's "Bag of Tells" tonight at A Premiere and An Odyssey with Amorsima Trio, Scott Donald, and Daniel Racer.

We saved this artist feature for “A Premiere and An Odyssey” for last because it shines a light on double bassist and composer Daniel Racer, whose work “Bag of Tells” will be premiered at the concert!

Dan is an active musician and teacher who also performed as the principal bassist for Wichita Grand Opera, and a jazz bassist with many groups in the Wichita area. He has been living in Austin since 2018.

As a composer, he says in a previous interview, “I want to create something new and the idea of creation is what drives me to write music. I love sound and I like to hear things and I’m inspired by that. That gives me all kinds of emotional aesthetic responses. I want to create those same things...”

Our next artist feature for “A Premiere and An Odyssey” is Dr. Scott Donald

In case you’re new around here, Scott is Studio A’s founder and one of its co-owners. He’s a native of South Carolina who earned his BM in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville, SC. He completed his MM in Applied Piano and DMA in Music Education/Piano Pedagogy from UT-Austin. In 2010, Dr. Donald made his Carnegie Hall debut at the Weill Recital Hall in New York City.

A well-known piano pedagogue, Scott’s research in piano pedagogy has been featured at international and national conferences.

Amorsima Trio is an ensemble that redefines the traditional expectations of a string trio, bringing a fresh and contemporary perspective to the stage. Comprised of violinist Mia Detwiler, violist Mike Capone, and cellist Kourtney Newton, the trio was founded in 2016 through a shared passion for new music. With an unwavering commitment to expanding the string trio repertoire, the Amorsima Trio actively commissions new works, seeking out collaborations with innovative composers.
