One last throwback. 💜

Over the past few weeks, we've looked back at years of Running Remote.

From our early days in Bali, when remote work was still something many companies were trying to understand.

To Montreal, as the world emerged from a period that changed work forever.

To Lisbon, where our global community continued to grow.

And finally, to Austin in 2025.

Different cities. Different stages. Different conversations.

But always the same idea at the center of it all:

Bring together the people building the future of work, and give them a place to learn from each other.

There are thousands of photos in the Running Remote archive. We could probably keep sharing them forever.

But this feels like a good one to end our throwback series with.

Not a stage.
Not a presentation.
All of us, together.

Of all the moments we've shared at Running Remote over the years, this one still makes us smile. 💕

At Running Remote 2022 in Montreal, Ike Stranathan invited Fiona Lideza onto the stage.

Then, in front of the Running Remote community, he got down on one knee.

She said yes. 💍

We came together that year to talk about the future of work. We didn't expect to become part of someone's love story.

Years later, this is still one of those Running Remote moments we'll never forget.

Every Running Remote conference eventually comes down to one thing:

The people in the room.

This was Lisbon, 2024.

After two days of conversations about remote work, leadership, culture, technology, and where work was heading, we gathered for one more photo together.

Speakers. Attendees. Partners. Friends. People who had traveled from around the world because they believed there was still a better way to work.

The stage matters.

But looking back, it's the community around it that we remember most.

A conference about remote work has always been about people.

Montreal 2022 was a particularly good reminder of that.

After a period when so much of our professional and personal lives had happened through screens, there was something different about simply being in the same place again.

The conversations between sessions.
The introductions.
The unexpected connections.

Technology makes distributed work possible.

People make it work.

Some things haven't changed.

This was the Running Remote community gathering in Bali during our early years.

Different countries. Different companies. Different approaches to work.

One shared belief: where someone works shouldn't determine what they're capable of contributing.

The technology has changed enormously since these early conferences. The community has grown. And remote work itself has entered the mainstream
But bringing people together to learn from one another?

That's still at the heart of Running Remote.

Bali. Montreal. Lisbon. Austin. And many conversations in between.

When we look back at past Running Remote conferences, it's easy to focus on how much the world of work has changed.

But these photos remind us of something else.

Running Remote has always been about the people willing to share what they're learning.

Founders. Operators. People leaders. Researchers. Remote work pioneers. And a global community curious enough to keep questioning how work could be better.
The future of work keeps changing.

We're grateful to have spent all these years exploring it together.

Bali, 2018 🌴

Running Remote gathered in Indonesia to discuss how to build companies differently.

Remote work was still far from mainstream. For many organizations, hiring and operating across borders was an experiment rather than an established way of working.

Inside this room, though, the conversation had already moved on to the harder questions:

How do you scale it?
How do you build culture?
How do you lead when your team isn't in one place?

Eight years later, we're still asking those questions, just at a very different scale.

Running Remote has moved around the world over the years, but the reason we gather hasn't changed:

Lisbon gave us a pretty incredible backdrop for it.

The remote work conversation changed almost overnight.

Before 2020, much of our focus was on helping organizations understand how remote work could work.

By Running Remote Montreal in 2022, the question had become:

What do we do with everything we've just learned?

Companies were navigating remote, hybrid, return-to-office, distributed hiring, new expectations from employees, and entirely new ways of leading teams.

There wasn't one answer.

So we brought together the people working through it.

Then came Lisbon 🇵🇹.

In 2023 and again in 2024, Running Remote brought the community to one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

By then, the question was no longer whether remote work could work.

The conversation had matured.

How do we make distributed organizations better?
How do we build stronger cultures?
How do we give people flexibility without losing connection?

And, as always, some of the best answers came from conversations outside the conference room.
