CineNoche: BERTA SOY YO
A film by Katia Lara

This spring, the monthly CineNoche series features documentaries spotlighting women's activism in Latin America at Violet Crown Austin

On March 2, 2016, environmental activist Berta Cáceres was gunned down by hired hitmen. She had led the Lenca people in their efforts to stop the construction of a hydroelectric plant on the Gualcarque River. Before her assassination, Cáceres wrote down the names of the people and companies who wanted her dead. Using these clues, a local journalist and an international lawyer put the puzzle pieces together to solve her murder.

Why a film festival?

My name is Kat and I love movies. When I was young it was the perfect escape from a hot summer day and my brother and I went at least once a week to the bargain theatre near our house in Lubbock. The cost was seventy-five cents.

Now you can go and recline and have adult beverages and still get out of the Texas heat. As a micro-budget filmmaker I go to a lot of festivals and love how they all have their own personality and vibe. Learning about a variety of causes and viewpoints helps me form a more open worldview.

Lake Travis is a wonderful place to live. The lake, the hills, and most importantly, the people make it a destination for many and home for the lucky. For several years I’ve been mulling over an idea for a way to share more independent films with my community.

We started having movie nights on our front deck and then lawn. They were popular and fun. Friends came and they brought their friends. This is just an extension of my movie nights, but we’re including the entire Lake Travis Community to help us host and share our love of film. I hope you’ll get involved.
