“Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.”
“Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are.”
This is something my grandmother used to say all the time, and the older I get, the more I realize how true it is.
The people you surround yourself with shape you. The environments you place yourself in shape you. The community you choose matters.
Every great coach, athlete, and mentor I’ve ever known starts their season with some kind of mantra — something to return to when things get hard.
So as we head into this Summer, I want you to remember this:
Whatever your goal is — grinding harder, chasing a PR this Fall, having fun, finding purpose, or finding your people — none of it happens alone.
The people you choose to run with during the dark moments and difficult miles become a reflection of who you are.
Sometimes we all want a community that shows up for us, believes in us, and reminds us that we’re not alone. But over time, something powerful happens:
The belief we borrow from others slowly becomes belief in ourselves.
And eventually, we become the kind of people who pass that belief on to someone else.
That’s how strong communities are built.
The Texas Summer is brutal. It’s relentless, unforgiving, and physically demanding beyond belief. But honestly, that’s part of what inspires me to put these events on.
Hard times bring people together in ways easy times never will.
Hard Summer + Big Goals = Stronger Community.
As we gear up for the Capt’n Karl’s Series, keep this in mind:
We may not all be out there for the same distance or the same amount of time, but we’re all out there together. We’re all suffering together. And that’s exactly why we make it through.
If you run with us, you run with Perspective.
You run with the belief that life is bigger than ourselves, and that none of us are meant to do this alone.
20 years strong.
Capt’n Karl’s 2026 — the greatest nighttime trail-running butt whooping party in the nation.
Who are you running with this Summer?
