Día de los Mu***os, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 to honor deceased loved ones. It blends ancient Indigenous Aztec traditions, like honoring the goddess Mictecacihuatl, with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which the Spanish introduced.

The celebration is a reunion for families to welcome back the souls of the dead with altars called ofrendas, food, and festive remembrance.

Mezcal is affiliated because it’s offered as a traditional tribute on ofrendas (altars) to welcome the spirits of deceased loved ones, symbolizing that the living and the dead share in the drink.

It is also shared among family and friends during celebrations as a way to honor the deceased, celebrate their lives, and strengthen connections to ancestry, particularly in regions like Oaxaca.

Celebrations in Oaxaca involve creating altars (ofrendas) with offerings of food and drink, decorating graves with marigolds and candles, and elaborate public festivities like parades, street performances, and cemetery gatherings with music, food, and dancing.
