Why should you care about population growth in a state like Michigan?

Because population is a scoreboard.

It tells you whether people believe in your future enough to move in, stay, raise kids, start companies, and build lives here. It shapes everything—economic growth, talent pipelines, housing, education, transit, tax base. If people aren’t coming (or staying), none of the rest works the way it should.

On 2/25 in Ann Arbor, we’re hosting a Midwest House Salon Dinner with Hilary Doe, Michigan’s First Chief Growth Officer.

We’ll dig into what she’s learned tackling the population challenge head-on, where Michigan is seeing real traction, and what’s next as she steps into leading the new Michigan Institute for Growth & Opportunity.

We first met MC Mikolay in Ann Arbor at the “Michigan Innovation Reunion” at University of Michigan.

We were doing round the room intros and obviously we’re always excited when other Midwesterners are at Michigan innovation events, so my ears perked up when I heard she said was from Drive Capital. Then she said she was originally from Grand Rapids (!)...and we knew we had to make a new friend.

After we got through all the people we knew in common and the high school rivalries, we talked about why we do the things we do. I love the way the way she connects innovation to problem solving, and the focus she has on getting more capital to more founders - in Michigan and beyond.
