The Charity: Sheriff’s Girls Ranch
Opened in 1973 by the Alabama Sheriffs’ Association, the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch is located on property donated by Mr. James D. “Duck” Samford. Currently the campus consists of 3 ranch homes, 2 staff houses, an office, chapel, gym, pool, pond, and various support buildings. The ranchers attend a local school, where they are involved in various extra-curricular activities. They are very active in youth programs and attend local churches. Ranch highlights include: annual beach trip, day at the water park, spa day, various camp experiences, Columbus Cottonmouths hockey game, fashion show, nursing home ministry, church food ministry, and camping trips. Christmas parties for our young ladies, in addition to spring and fall fundraising events.
The Girls Ranch works in a family based setting. They provide 24 hour long-term care for abused, abandoned, and neglected children. On the Tallapoosa Ranch, there currently 15 girls in 3 different homes. The girls age from 9-20 years old. Although our ranch is classified as a group home, we strive to provide a family environment. The moms and pops (House parents) apply Christian principles; hard work, responsibility, manners and loving kindness to help the children grow strong in body, mind, and spirit.
