We, the Black Con Coalition, are deeply saddened by the passing of Ash, a beloved member of our cosplay and creative community. Ash shared their joy, talent, and imagination in ways that touched and inspired so many. Their presence and artistry will continue to be felt.

Our hearts are with Ash’s loved ones, friends, and everyone who is grieving. This loss is a painful reminder of why we work so hard to create inclusive, affirming, and SAFE spaces where Black nerds, creatives, and cosplayers can show up fully as themselves; spaces where our community is seen, celebrated, protected, and held with care.

As community leaders, we also want to acknowledge that we have more work to do. We recognize the responsibility we carry to ensure that every member of our community is supported and never made to feel alone, and we are deeply sorry that all members of our community do not feel supported and safe. Going forward, we are committed to building a united effort of resources, programming, and gatherings that allow Black creatives to connect, socialize, learn, and heal together.

This includes deepening our outreach and partnerships with and including HBCUs to offer direct support, resources, and tangible care around issues impacting our community such as body dysmorphia, LGBTQ+ experiences, mental health, and substance use. We will continue working to co-create a community that is grounded not only in joy and creativity, but in compassion, access, and accountability.

We honor Ash’s spirit, their contribution to our world, and the creative paths they helped illuminate for those who follow.

Rest in power, Ash. You will be missed and remembered.

Hermitcosser, aka Hermes, is a Philadelphia-based cosplayer who has been cosplaying for over 11 years. He is best known for cosplaying characters from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, One Piece, Demon Slayer, and more. When he’s not in cosplay or working on props, he enjoys listening to music and gaming, and he is an avid Zelda fan. Hermes uses his unique background as a black cosplayer to put a spin on whoever he cosplays, and tries to add elements of his culture and heritage to every character he portrays. Inspiring those around him through cosplay is one of his biggest motivations. Hermes hopes to be a role model for other people of color to express themselves freely and embrace their nerdiness, no matter who they are and what others say.

Starting young, Prettlophine Cotton had one thing in mind, and that was to inspire others with her creations and her characters.

Known for her 2D illustration work on Zamination and her vibrant, joyful color scripting work, Prettlophine was excited to bring her just as colorful ideas to the public!

Starting young in Silver Spring, Maryland, Prettlophine was most inspired by musically driven cartoons like Steven Universe, My Little Pony, and Wander Over Yonder. She created her own stories at the young age of seven: writing scripts, creating original characters, you name it!

Ever since her Senior year of high school, Zipped Up has become Prettlophine Cotton’s full-time job. As the creator of the series, Prettlophine Cotton serves as the director for the pilot, as well as assisting each department in any way possible.

Introducing Peter Weiss (aka Darkside_Hero_Cosplay). He is a 5 year cosplay veteran and a U.S. Army veteran founder of House Skirata Veterans Covert cosplay group. He started the group to help veterans deal with ptsd through different outlets such as building armor, painting, and becoming your favorite characters. Cosplay honestly is a therapy for him so he needed to share it with my brothers and sisters in arms. Some of his most recognizable cosplays are Red Hood and his Mandalorian.

Although his passion for his dark wolf ranger has gotten it recognized and he will be doing a cameo in power rangers unworthy and be a main ranger in an upcoming ranger fan production called unbroken. He has been on and hosted panels and honored to be a cosplay judge at a few different conventions. His passion for cosplay runs deep as a kid he grew up hard he had nothing and connecting and becoming these characters was always an escape. He wanted to share that passion with the world. He does a multitude of smaller conventions to bring the joy of cosplay to the children who can’t attend bigger cons and give the parents a chance to bond through the different characters and fandoms.

He also made it a family thing with his wife and his daughter who now attend the conventions selling his daughters crafts and passions for creating.

Rorrie D. Travis is an actor, theatrical coach, and runway director who played Devon Daniels, the Red Beast Morphers Ranger in Power Rangers Beast Morphers.

From a very young age Rorrie Travis knew that he wanted to be an entertainer. He started acting and modeling when he was 15. Since then he has been showcasing his acting and dancing skills and as leads for both. In 2016 he established RDT-Flims to coach others and have a hand in nourishing future stars.

J1-Con would like to introduce Greg as the poster child for “you’re doing it wrong, yet somehow it’s working”. Joining the world of voice acting through his background in IT and Engineering (that is not typo), Greg’s career has been… interesting, studying drama with the Walnut St. Theatre, the Wilma Theatre, and the People’s Improv Theatre. His agent once told him that he “had a face for radio”, and he’s been a cautionary tale of “how not to be a voice actor” ever since.

As a voice actor, Greg has made a career out of being the guy in the background – getting punched, blown up, dissected, vaporized, and occasionally delivering a monologue before disappearing from the scene. He’s had the pleasure to perform in anime such as “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, “Tales of Vesperia”, “Shiki”, and “Ikki Tousen” (where he gets beat up… a lot), among others. He’s best known for his work in commercial VO, with clients like DuPont, Lockheed Martin, AztraZeneca, Verizon and the NBA. Recently, he appeared (briefly) in the film “Zombie Wedding”, which is was just as delightfully unhinged as it sounds (but he got to have hair on his head for the first time in years!).

Outside of the booth, Greg managed to earn advanced degrees in Engineering and Trusted Computing, along with several professional certifications (which nobody cares about unless you’re a cybersecurity we**ie). And because he’s turned overkill into an art form, Greg also serves on multiple Technical Steering committees for various cybersecurity and engineering organizations.

Catero Alain Colbert is an actor best know for playing Killer Bee on Naruto Shippuden. He also plays Darui on the same show. He played Tom Staton on Showtimes Roadies and Harley on TNT’s Briarpatch. He was Dedrick on Freeforms Love in the time of Corona. Played Coldcast in Superman vs the Elites. Has guest starred on Shameless, Training Day and several other shows.
