Recruiting With Dedrick:
It's time for What Was Said Wednesday!! Today I want to talk about contingent (Temp) Workforce over the regular Full-Time Workers. When the word temp or contractor is mentioned a lot of the time people get severely nervous or take off running. We have been trained to know two types of work and that is Full or Part-time work. Temp (in most cases) is not something that anyone really wants to do because there is a big question mark as to rather the organization will keep you on after the period is over, of if they will just let you go for not showing up.
Let me just say this, studies have shown that over 45% of the workforce has switched to a temp to perm model and that number is rapidly growing. Companies know the cost from the recruitment, hiring, training, and ramp up of an employee and they are rapidly cutting costs in that area by hiring people on a "trial to hire" basis. Now, everyone isn't doing that, but there has been a great push for that as in the long run it saves the company more money, and prevents them from potentially bringing on an awful hire and paying for benefits. What does that really mean for you as the person looking for a job or a change from what you are doing now?? It simply means you need to be open-minded and confident in your skill set. If you are presented a contract, contract to hire (temp to hire) opportunity don't immediately run from it. The reality of it is despite what you think your permanent role is very much so temp and you can be replaced at any time, it's just our minds don't think about that.
Statistically over the past 5 years the easiest way to get hired on full time through companies is to take the temp opportunity and show out during that time and they will more than likely hire you in permanently. What you don't want to do is take the opportunity, start calling out, not showing up, have an excuse for everything because they have no grounds to keep you there. This is your time to shine to get your foot in the door to your ideal position. At the end of the day don't run away, but run towards with confidence you never know what might happen!! You heard it from me!!
