This year’s festival features experimental narratives, documentaries, animation, video art, AI-assisted films, hybrid works, and films that push beyond traditional filmmaking.

Something strange is coming to Atlanta.

Atlanta Experimental presents the Expanded Cinema Showcase and we’re looking for artists with short 6 to 8 minute live performance pieces to perform alongside experimental films throughout the night.

Seeking:
Contemporary dance
Spoken word
Movement art
Experimental drag
Puppet / object performance
Interactive performance art
And other minimal setup performances that blur the line between cinema and live art.

Innovative Vision Award Winner

Directed by A.B. Osborne

A space explorer discovers a breathtaking alien world filled with strange ecosystems and fantastical creatures that force her to reflect on the damaged planet she left behind. Iridescent combines environmental storytelling, imaginative world-building, and handcrafted animation to create a visually rich sci-fi experience filled with wonder and melancholy.

Directed by Augusta University Animation Program founder A.B. Osborne and created over four years by two student cohorts, the film stands as a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and independent animation. Every creature, landscape, and visual detail was built by hand, resulting in a world that feels both dreamlike and deeply human.

What begins as a quiet Martha’s Vineyard getaway turns into a nightmare when a couple’s vacation spirals into paranoia, illness, and body horror. Tick blends unsettling psychological tension with deeply physical horror, using the terror of infection and transformation to explore isolation, privilege, and the hidden darkness beneath idyllic spaces.

Filmmaker Sam Permar combines naturalistic performances with surreal horror imagery to create stories that feel intimate, strange, and emotionally raw. Inspired by real experiences and local history, Tick uses horror not just to disturb, but to examine the anxieties and invisible pressures lurking beneath modern life.

Set during a Boy Scout camping trip, Arrow follows a 12-year-old boy struggling to reconnect with his best friend while navigating the unspoken rules of belonging, masculinity, and identity. Quietly emotional and deeply personal, the film captures the painful feeling of trying to become someone the world will accept.

Atlanta-based filmmaker Daniel Connell brings a thoughtful and authentic voice to the screen, drawing from his own experiences to tell stories about identity, culture, and the awkward realities of growing up. A recent SCAD graduate, Arrow marks the arrival of a promising new filmmaker with a clear perspective and emotional honesty.

Three knights enter the woods with one goal: earn the title of the King’s royal knight. But before sunset, they must decide which one of them deserves the honor. The Three Pawns blends fantasy, tension, and character-driven storytelling into a medieval tale about ambition, loyalty, and sacrifice.

Georgia State student filmmaker Che Connor Ethridge brings a hands-on passion for filmmaking to every part of the process, from directing and writing to stunt choreography, editing, and visual effects. His work combines imaginative concepts with emotional sincerity, creating stories that feel both epic and personal.

In Christmas IRL, an influencer is forced to confront what actually matters during the holiday season as online validation and real human connection begin to collide. Blending satire, warmth, and emotional honesty, the film explores modern loneliness, digital identity, and the strange ways we perform our lives online.

Originally from South Africa and now based in Los Angeles, Rochan Liu brings a sharp comedic voice and heartfelt perspective to her storytelling. Her work has been recognized by Slamdance, Cannes Lions, Disney, and Sci-Fi London, with writing credits spanning television, podcasts, and indie film.
