The virus is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated f***s, environments, or people. The virus can survive outside of the body for long periods of time and can contaminate surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. It does not spread to humans.

Veterinarians are still trying to understand why.
