Working with Mark H**b and Micah Rice, I am excited to announce our first annual UGA Cycling Alumni Event. The event will take place in Athens, Georgia over Twilight weekend April 21 and 22, 2023. We are hosting three (3) different activities over the weekend.
For Friday night, April 21st, beginning at 8PM, we have rented a space at the Terrapin Brewery in Athens. During the Friday night event, we will recognize several local folks who made UGA and Athens cycling a possibility during our time in Athens. We will also recognize our former teammates who are no longer with us. If you are aware of any former UGA or Athens cyclist who is no longer living, please email us at the email address below, along with any additional information you think is relevant so that we can recognize the person during the event.
We will also be making the first ever induction of former UGA riders into a UGA Alumni Cycling Hall of Fame. The first two (2) riders who will be inducted, and who need no introduction, are Paul King and Tina (Mayolo) Pic. The tickets to Friday nights portion will cost $40.00 and includes the presentation and two (2) beers. There will be food trucks on site for anyone wanting to have something to eat.
For Saturday morning, we will be offering tickets to participate in the Gambler ride on Saturday. There is a 60k and a 100k option. The tickets for that will cost $50.00. This is the promoters (and yes, Gene Dixon is still the man making Twilight happen). You will be required to sign a release for the ride when you will get a packet and a t-shirt at registration.
For Saturday evening, we have worked with the Twilight promoter for a block of reserved seating at the Amateur Finals, the Women’s Pro, and the Men’s Pro races on Saturday evening. The ticket price for Saturday evening will be $80.00 and this will include the reserved seating along with food and drinks.
You can purchase a ticket for one, all, or any combination of the three (3) events over the two dates. While you can buy tickets for Saturday’s events directly from the promoter, we decided to offer a one stop shop for purchasing everything just to try and make things easier for folks coming from out of town. If you elect to purchase tickets from us, payment can be made via PayPal to [email protected]. After you make your payment, please confirm your selections by emailing us at the same email address. Any funds that are left over after covering expenses will be donated to the UGA cycling club or other Athens based cycling organization or may be used to buy more beer for everyone on Friday night!
While these events are designed to focus on Athens and UGA cycling, everyone is welcome! We would love to have anyone involved in cycling as well as all current/former SECCA riders attend, so please let your friends, teammates, or even your former competitors know about the events.
