On May 20, 1932, Amelia Earhart took off on a record-setting flight and became the first woman — and second person after Charles Lindbergh — to cross the Atlantic solo.

The act earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress, the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor from the French government, and the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society from President Hoover, pictured here, becoming the first woman to ever receive this prestigious award.
