Everyone Meet one of your Move;MEANT Con '22 kind hearted and extensively accredited Contemporary & Floorwork Instructor

Gavin Stewart (BFA Dance Performance, UMKC Conservatory) is Co-Director of Stewart/Owen Dance, where he creates, performs, and produces contemporary dance experiences with his partner in life and art, Vanessa Owen. S/O Dance presents innovative performances and offers students and audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels the chance to experience the joy of movement.

S/O Dance is the first company commissioned by Wortham CPA to create a new work for their MainStage series, which premieres in April 2023. The company leads ongoing community dance classes for adults at the Wortham CPA and provides educational programming and performances throughout the region

Gavin is a seasoned performer and choreographer, working in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance. As a dancer he has worked with Richmond Ballet, Wylliams/Henry CDC, MOVE: the Company, Company E, Ballet Spartanburg Dark Circles Contemporary Dance, Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, and others.

During his time with Company E, Gavin performed regularly at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and worked extensively through the State Department touring as a Cultural Ambassador. These tours took him around the globe to dance, teach, and choreograph contemporary dance and musical theater productions.

Gavin's choreography has been set on Wylliams/Henry CDC, Richmond Ballet I & II, and Company E’s dance programs in Azerbaijan, Cuba, Israel, Kazakhstan, Palestine, the Republic of Georgia, Russia, and Turkmenistan. He continues to co-create dances with Vanessa Owen for dance companies, universities, and music artists around the US and for S/O Dance.

Gavin has served on the faculty of the Metropolitan Ballet Theater, CityDance, and the Academy at Terpsicorps, amongst many others.

Since moving to Western North Carolina in 2017 Gavin has continued to freelance as a professional contemporary dancer, musician, and film editor. Learn more at stewartowendance.com

Melvin AC Howell
is an internationally cultured choreographer and creative
director who has been transforming and molding lives, while
evolving the art of dance, for over 13 years. His approach is
his purpose, “Spread positivity, encouragement, and guidance through dance. The positivity movement.”
With a background in fitness, art, and many different
cultural styles of dance, Melvin brings a unique vision to the
world that is dance. His visionary style and technique
promotes growth physically and mentally, encouraging a
strengthened body, foundation, and creative capacity.
As a movement expert and master instructor in
Hip Hop, Contemporary, Jazz Funk, and Freestyle; Melvin
emits a genuine uplifting abundance of positive energy and
inspiration, which fills the atmosphere and effortlessly uplifts
your spirits, leaving you motivated and wanting more. With
dance serving as the primary purpose in his life, Melvin not
only touches at the center of what inspires people to move;
the desire to create, to feel, to connect, to speak without
words. Moreover, Melvin focuses on the core of the human
desire for motivation, support, inspiration, and love. It is his
mission, his passion, his life goal: “To Change People’s
Lives for the better.”

Everyone Meet one of your Move;MEANT Con '22 Contemporary and Floorwork Instructors!

Vanessa Owen is originally from Amity, Pennsylvania and she received her B.F.A. in Dance from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. Alongside her husband Gavin Stewart, Vanessa is co-director of Stewart/Owen Dance, the resident dance company of Asheville’s beloved Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. She has danced professionally with Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company, the Kennedy Center’s production of Children of Eden, Dark Circles Contemporary Dance and Company E. Vanessa performed regularly at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and worked extensively through the State Department touring as a Cultural Ambassador during her time with Company E. These tours took her to Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Cuba, Israel, Palestine, Republic of Georgia, Azerbaijan, China, and Uruguay where she taught, performed, and choreographed contemporary dance and musical theater productions.
Vanessa is a recipient of a McDowell Regional Artist Grant, a Fellowship in Choreography by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Audience Choice Award at the NYC Dance Gallery Festival, and her choreography has been presented at Wright State University, the Women in Dance Conference, YES! Dance Invitational, Velocity DC, Agora Dance, Shenandoah University, McCallum Theatre Choreography Festival, Asheville Fringe Arts Festival, CHOP SHOP Contemporary Dance, Richmond Dance Festival, Versatility Dance Festival, Palm Desert Choreography Festival, Austin Dance Festival, Stavna Ballet, Company E and Stewart/Owen Dance.
