What a great weekend of golf capped off by a fantastic finish on 18. The 62nd edition of the Asheboro City Amateur came to an end Sunday at Pinewood Country Club! There was quite a log jam at the top heading into Sundays final round. Three time champs JD Bass and Steve Kidd were there as well as relative new comers Garrett Law, Sam Davidson, Josh Spell and Zach Green and veteran Andy Routh. Multiple City Am winners Gary Pugh and Charlie Parks were vying for another shot at glory, while Catawba Freshman and former ER standout Conner Carter and Steven Spencer were searching for their first title! The title was definitely up for grabs. Charlie Parks set the tone early and often carding a pair of 34’s enroute to a 4 under 68 solidifying his spot on next years shootout (8th). Spencer shot a fine 69 and Carter and Kidd fired superb 71’s to finish 5th and 4th respectively. JD Bass came to Pinewood needing a great round to capture his 4th straight City Amateur victory, and he started out with an opening nine 36. Spell and Kidd matched Bass’ 36 and they went to the back nine still with the victory up for grabs. Bass made 5 straight pars to begin his back, while Kidd and Spell each were -1 through 14. There was a big momentum shift on 15 when Kidd bogeyed and Spell birdied, they were all tied up. Bass was still hanging out at +1. But the City Am doesn’t start until 16 on Sunday😊. Kidd rebounded with a birdie on 16 to get back to -5 and Spell parred it to remain at -5. Bass made birdie and jumped to level par. Bass hit a must make putt on 17 to go to -1. Kidd and Spell both made pars. After 17 holes, scores were Kidd -5, Spell -5 and Bass -1. JD managed to make an amazing eagle on 18 to make for some drama and finished at -3 for the event and a solid 3rd place finish. Then Kidd made par and set the stage for Josh Spell to make his birdie and win his first Asheboro City Amateur title. Spell rolled it in and took the victory. Congrats to Josh Spell and all the participants and sponsors that made this year’s tournament a reality. We appreciate each of you and thanks to the three area facilities, Asheboro Country Club, Asheboro Municipal, and Pinewood CC, who let us all use their courses this weekend! Can’t wait to see all of you back next year for the triad’s best tournament, the Asheboro City Amateur ⛳️
