The Sanctuary is a playground for creative action and artful living. Housed in the Arcata Women’s Club historic building, the Sanctuary is a space dedicated to making and experiencing art in community. We produce gallery exhibitions, live music, community events, workshops and much more. Our printmaking lab, ceramics studio, food garden, reference library, communal kitchen, general workshop, sewing studio, great hall and stage serve as venues for creative community-building. The Sanctuary is a project of Creative Sanctuary, a 501c3 nonprofit, incorporated September 4, 2015.

Yes Jesters! No Amazon!

at the Arcata Playhouse 1251 9th St.

“Yes Jesters! No Amazon” brings community together for an evening that begins with dinner and some Dada-Italo Calvino-clown inspired Cabaret that will eventually end when a public meeting breaks out. There will be a presentation of proposed action items, art and zine making prompts and supplies, group discussions, and room for . All activities will center around what we can do to oppose corporate rule in Humboldt County, in particular, you guessed it, a certain monopolistic megacorporation that wants to build a warehouse in Mckinleyville.

The Cabaret opens… on a stage… an actor is attempting to write a script for a play they hope will inspire a community to come together and defeat, against seemingly impossible odds, an exploitive corporation attempt to build a warehouse in their backyard… and suck the lifeblood from their local economy… but they’ve run out of time… the show is starting…

Expect clowns attempting to explain the economic effects of corporations on local economies, alternate realities where script writers are writing a script about a dangerous giant orange snake, an Amazon version of the board game Monopoly and… whenever our hero struggles with writers block and the play grinds to a halt… expect amazing local poets, singers, and players of instruments to bail the beleagured playwright out… by jumping on stage and performing their own salient-to-the-evenings-theme pieces…

Featuring James Zeller and Katie Belknap with special guest appearances by Jerry Martien, Katy Gurin, Jax and more to be announced.

After about 45 minutes the cast and playwright will begin to wonder what the heck they are doing. They’ll all agree, this is a serious topic and what we need is a public meeting to make some plans. The audience agrees, and as the curtains close, expect a real life public meeting to break out!
