What does your manufacturing process really need to accomplish?

Answering that question starts with identifying the product characteristics that are truly critical to quality. Some requirements must be met exactly. Others may provide room for flexibility.

That distinction matters. Greater flexibility in the right areas can potentially lead to:

1. Higher yields
2. A simpler manufacturing process
3. Faster throughput
4. Improved Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)

A tolerance of .002" versus .020" might not look like a dramatic difference on a drawing. From a manufacturing standpoint, however, it could require a completely different process. And that could dramatically alter your time to market, as well as your overall costs.

“You pay for the zeros after the decimal,” Delta ModTech's Market Segment Specialist Ben Tremblay notes. That’s why Delta asks an important question early in Process Development: Is that tolerance truly critical to quality?

One tolerance might require robotic pick-and-place. Another could potentially be achieved with island placement or die cutting in registration. Those costs could vary considerably.

Sometimes the person who can help solve your manufacturing problem works in a completely different part of the converting industry.

Creating those connections is one of the goals of ARC Summit Medical, September 29-30 in Minneapolis.
