It was wonderful to greet our patrons and supporters at Maryland Hall last night for Echoes of the Earth, with cellist Julian Schwarz. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of our 65th season!

Here are a few moments from our first Signature Series concert of the season. Conductor José-Luis Novo and our musicians opened the evening with Dvořák’s magical In Nature’s Realm. We welcomed Julian Schwarz for Jennifer Higdon’s Cello Concerto, written especially for him. The Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s Erin Jenkins and Alexander Collen joined us for Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, with soprano Judy Yannini.

🍃 Like his contemporaries of the Romantic era, Antonín Dvořák admired nature. His piece In Nature’s Realm explores these ideals. In Nature's Realm, the title of our season, and the opening piece at our concerts Echoes of the Earth, with cellist Julian Schwarz this weekend, was composed as part of a cycle of three concert overtures. It follows sonata form, establishing a gentle, deep melody that dissipates into fluttering winds and gradually cascades across the orchestra’s instruments into a brilliant ode. The piece is characteristic of Dvořák’s bold melodies, focused rhythm, and chromatic harmony, and of the Romantic era itself, in which composers captured the terror and beauty of the natural world in dramatic waves of sound.

Listeners love this piece for many reason, including:

• Evocative Landscape Painting: The music unfolds from a soft, hushed murmur into a glowing soundscape that mirrors the quiet serenity and beauty of the Bohemian forests.

• Imitative Birdsong and Nature Motifs: Dvořák weaves delicate woodwind lines (like flutes and oboes) over gentle string textures to simulate the voices and sounds of nature.

• Folk-Inspired Melodies: The central themes carry the rustic charm and joyful resonance of traditional Czech and Moravian folk music, including hints of regional yodeling.

• Philosophical Depth: Conceived as part of a trilogy originally titled Nature, Life, and Love, the piece shares a foundational nature motif that Dvořák used to represent the spiritual sustenance he found in his rural estate at Vysoká.

It's here! Go to Forward Brewing on 4th Street in Eastport for our first custom brew, aptly named Fermata. A fermata is a musical note that indicates a stop or pause. It's the perfect reminder for us all to stop, pause, and enjoy a quintessential Annapolis moment.

The can was designed using an image from Jay Fleming, Photographer, called Chesapeake Marsh Creek. Jay generously allowed us to use the image in marketing materials used in our theme this season, "In Nature's Realm". 🎤 We're very excited to announce that dancers from The Ballet Theatre of Maryland will join us for both upcoming concerts of Echoes of the Earth, with cellist Julian Schwarz, performing Manuel De Falla's "El sombrero de tres picos" (The Three Cornered Hat) .

Choreographed by Léonide Massine, the ballet - set to music by De Falla - premiered in 1919. The plot of the ballet was derived from Pedro Antonio de Alarcón's 1874 novel of the same title. The story is about a magistrate infatuated with a miller's faithful wife, whom he attempts to seduce.

Alexander Collen: Alexander began his dance training in Minnesota and began dancing professionally after his graduation from the University of Minnesota Law School. A competitor at the 22nd Varna IBC, Alexander is privileged to have performed many of the great classical roles, to have worked with renowned choreographers, and is excited by the opportunity to continue to do so in this, his fifteenth season with BTM.

Erin Jenkins: Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Erin Jenkins received her ballet training at Pittsburgh Ballet House under the direction of Kwang-suk Choi and Sae Young Kang. After competing at ADC/IBC, Erin was offered a scholarship for BalletMet’s trainee program. While there she performed closely with the company and artistic director, Edwaard Liang, in all of their classical productions. She was fortunate to perform principal roles in several of George Balanchine’s ballets such as Serenade, Walpurgisnacht, and Western Symphony.

We’re looking forward to having Julian Schwarz back at Maryland Hall for Echoes of the Earth, with cellist Julian Schwarz on October 2–3.

Until then, here he is with ASO concertmaster Netanel Draiblate (Airline Violinist), playing Johan Halvorsen’s Passacaglia on a Theme by George Frideric Handel as an encore during his 2022 visit.

We loved hearing these two play together, and so did our audiences. What a treat! We can't guarantee that particularly magical encore again at our upcoming concerts. But we can promise you that Julian's performance of Jennifer Higdon's new Cello Concerto, written for him and premiering in Spring 2026 with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, will surprise and delight all music lovers.

Echoes of the Earth is our first Signature Series concert of the 2026-27 season. We’d love to see you there.
