For the second time, Annapolis Yacht Club has opened the Request for Invitation process for the 7th edition of the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational® on September 18-20, 2026 in Annapolis, MD. San Diego Yacht Club prevailed in 2025 with other regatta winners having been Royal Thames YC, New York YC, San Francisco YC and Annapolis YC. Interested teams should complete the Request for Invitation no later than February 21, 2026.

Format:
Over three days, teams of six crew members will race in the three disciplines comprising the 3-2-1® format:
• 3v3 team racing with no spinnakers and two sailors per boat,
• 2v2 team racing with optional spinnakers and three sailors per boat, and
• 1v1 match racing with optional spinnakers and all six sailors on the same boat.
Each of the team’s six sailors will sail in all three disciplines throughout the same rotation thereby requiring the versatility to assume different roles depending on the boat, crew and race format. Team racing is sailed in the new fleet of Club owned Sonars with Match Racing on AYC member-owned J/105s.

San Diego Yacht Club are the 2025 Annapolis Yacht Club 3-2-1 Invitational champions, bringing home the trophy for the first time!

The team fought hard over three days across the three disciplines, finishing with a 13-4 record. They excelled in the 3v3, not losing a single race they sailed 🤯 Hats off to the team!

Last year’s winners Royal Thames Yacht Club finished second, besting St. Francis in a (rather complicated) tiebreak. Both teams finished with a 10-6 record. Congratulations to all of the teams and THANK YOU for helping make this event great!

What an exciting day on the bay!

From the get go, it was a race to complete as many flights as possible in the champagne conditions. Racing started promptly at 10, and the organizing team was able to get through 44 of the total 84 races needed to complete the series 🤩

San Diego remained dominant for most of the day, going undefeated until the afternoon. Their speed sets them apart – when they were on, they were ON. As the long day wore on, they took two loses in the 2v2: to Annapolis Yacht Club and St. Francis, finishing the day with an 11-2 record.

Last year’s winners Royal Thames Yacht Club are squarely in second with a 7-4 record – not an insurmountable gap, but they’ll have to work hard tomorrow to catch SDYC. The team has sailed mostly 2v2 team races, a discipline they excel in.

The battle for third place will be one to watch: there are three teams with six wins each who could claim a spot on the podium. Eastport Yacht Club, hometown heroes Annapolis Yacht Club, and St. Francis Yacht Club are all in the hunt for the top three.

Will San Diego maintain their hold on the fleet to win their FIRST Annapolis Yacht Club 3-2-1 Invitational? You won’t want to miss what’s next – stay tuned to our Instagram story for the all the action from the final day tomorrow!

Lots of smiles and not a lot of wind for the first day of the Annapolis Yacht Club 3-2-1 🌬️

The forecast was light and variable, and the expert race committee was able to get off one flight in the window of useable breeze. After flight one, the wind decided not to cooperate, and the race committee sent the fleet in AP over A at 2:30. But never fear: there’s more to the 3-2-1 than just racing. AYC had cold beverages waiting for competitors once they hit the dock, and they were able to enjoy the club’s amenities while mixing and mingling with other teams (plus feed their competitive spirit with a cannonball contest!).

While the racing is why we’re all here, the core of the 3-2-1 is FUN. Fast paced racing paired with quality time on and off the water keeps teams coming back year after year. All the racing formats happen at once – match racing and team racing – so there’s constantly action to either watch or be a part of. AND there’s incredible hospitality and on-shore events, thanks to the staff and volunteers at Annapolis Yacht Club. Come for the racing, and stay for the service 😉

Tomorrow’s forecast is looking like a beautiful day for racing – but until then, we’ve got cold drinks, a perfect pool, and delish dinner to look forward to!

Annapolis Yacht Club announced the opening of the Request for Invitation process for the 6th edition of the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational®.

The regatta will be held Friday-Sunday, September 19-21, 2025. Check out the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational® webpage including video coverage and still photography, from the 2024 event.

What makes the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational® different from other interclub regattas?

The innovative concept of the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational® has raised the bar for interclub regattas. Over three days, teams of six crew members will race in the three disciplines comprising the 3-2-1® format:
- 3v3 team racing with no spinnakers and two sailors per boat,
- 2v2 team racing with optional spinnakers and three sailors per boat, and
- 1v1 match racing with optional spinnakers and all six sailors on the same boat.

Each of the team's six sailors will sail in all three disciplines throughout the same rotation thereby requiring the versatility to assume different roles depending on the boat, crew, and race format. Team racing is sailed in the new fleet of Club owned Sonars with Match Racing on AYC member owned J/105s.

Royal Thames Yacht Club prevailed last year’s highly competitive Annapolis YC 3-2-1 invitational. Other past regatta winners have included New York YC, San Francisco YC and Annapolis YC.

Shoreside festivities are as much a part of the event as the racing. The entry fee includes a Friday night semi-formal cocktail party and dinner at the Main Clubhouse and a Saturday night “sailor casual” dinner at the Activity Center. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day for competitors. A limited number of social passes will be available for purchase for non-sailing guests and spectator boat opportunities will be available for friends and family.

It just takes a different perspective sometimes. A kaleidoscope? A jigsaw puzzle? A ballet? No matter how you view the plethora of working parts that is the Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational®, it is true when competitor Matt Knowles said, “Racing in this event feels like organized chaos.”

3-2-1® Celebrates Year 5!

Racing in the 2024 Annapolis YC 3-2-1 Invitational® got underway Friday in what some people would call “chamber of commerce Annapolis conditions.” The Invitational finished Sunday in a close competition, with outstanding racing skills on display throughout the day. Congratulations go out to The Royal Thames Yacht Club – the first European club to participate in the event – who earned top honors.
