Throughout my life, as I have intentionally surrounded myself with music, I have been curious about the many different ways humans have found to engage with, be influenced by, enlightened and outraged by music and what that means for musicians and music venues in our communities...Art has always been vulnerable to public concerns, stemming from its ability to raise complicated feelings. I don’t have health insurance, but I bet I receive better health care than many people who do. Friends and family often understandably express concern about my lack of insurance, but I marvel at how often they then proceed to share with me the troubling experiences they have with the healthcare system: waiting months to get an appointment with their primary care doctor, not being allowed to share all their health concerns during a doctor’s appointment, and the most troubling of all, life threatening circumstances that result from overlooked diagnoses. Mindy Eisenberg founded Yoga Moves MS, a nonprofit adaptive yoga organization, over 20 years ago, providing free classes to those impacted by multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other neuromuscular disorders. Her inspiration? Growing up with a mother with multiple sclerosis who spent the better part of twenty-seven years in bed paired with a profound belief in the healing impact of a regular yoga practice. The Mahons don’t endeavor to build their client’s dream home. “We prefer to build their ‘legacy home’ to be passed down for generations,” said Andrea Mahon. The goal is anchored in something more tangible than today’s dreams. “We build homes to last, but more so, to matter,” Mike Mahon added. And that is what the Mahons work so hard toward. Rather, my sanguine stance regarding the possibility of AI destroying our species grows out of my fledgling understanding—rising occasionally to melancholic acceptance—that much that happens in life is literally out of my hands. Nevertheless, besides the existential one, I do have some grave misgivings about AI.
