Ann Arbor Community Messiah Sing

Ann Arbor Community Messiah Sing Join us every December for an unrehearsed reading of Handel's Messiah for the pure pleasure of the performers! Details below: WHO PERFORMS? WHO PUTS THIS ON?

In 2022, we returned to a face-to-face live event. ANN ARBOR COMMUNITY MESSIAH SING
Celebrating 50+ Years of Community Tradition

********************************************************************************

WHAT IS IT? An unrehearsed reading of Handel's Messiah played and sung for the pure holiday musical pleasure of the performers. This will be the 58th anniversary of your annual community

"sing." Anyone interested and capable of a good effort in reading and performing the vocal or orchestral parts: amateurs, professionals, families, school and church groups. This is an all-volunteer event. A small group of singers and instumental musicians fills key roles to plan and put on the event. All are welcome to assist, especially on the day of the annual Sing. FINANCING THE SING
We operate of a frayed shoestring. There's no admission charge, but there will be several opportunities to donate. Your money goes directly to purchasing scores, publicity, and facility rental. We suggest $5/person to cover expenses and help those that may not be able to pay. We accept donations via Paypal, Venmo, or old-fashioned paper checks. QUESTIONS

History part 2- maturity in 1980 and after
A new era began in 1980, with the move to our present location, St. Clare's Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor. We sang in their original santuary-in-the round, next to Packard St. (We moved to the current space was soon after it opened, in 1994.)
We probably had an orchestra by this date. For several years, conducting students from the U of M raised the baton. The late Robert Pratt became our conductor in 1988; he stepped down after the 2007 sing.
We don't know for sure when Mary Seffek-Blaske became the convenor. She started keeping excellent records in 1986 and continued through 2005. Annual reminders were sent by US Mail!
If you have any memories or additional info from the 2980s and 90s, please post below.

History - the earliest days. People have been singing Messiah in Ann Arbor since the 1800s. By the 1960s, the annual performance by UMS was very polished, with a rehearsed chorus and highly-skilled soloists and orchestra. At about this time, people began a tradition of reading through the vocal score in someone's living room.

In 1965 the sing moved to the Friends Meeting house on Hill St. and Willard Cates conducted. We don't know if there was any instrumental accompaniment in those early years.

Handel's oratorio, Messiah, was first performed on April 13, 1742. While many associate it with the Easter season, people in Ann Arbor, Mich. have been singing it at Christmas time since the 1800s.
