AMHERST ARTS NIGHT PLUS CEASES OPERATIONS

Dear Friends of Amherst Arts Night Plus,

We’re writing to share news with you about Amherst Arts Night Plus (AANP). After nearly 20 incredible years of art and community in Amherst, the governance committee has jointly decided to discontinue the operation of Arts Night Plus.

The decision to dissolve the current operation was not an easy one. As you know, managing the core operations and organizing additional events is a labor of love from our team of volunteers. Our final decision was prompted by the need of two long-standing leaders to step down, and the recognition by the two interim co-chairs that leading Arts Night would be unsustainable for them.

Prior to the shuttering of galleries and museums in March 2020 due to COVID, AANP provided a monthly Thursday evening art walk through more than 15 art and culture venues in downtown Amherst. For some months following the COVID shutdown, AANP operated virtually by offering online art presentations and discussions for several months. That ultimately became unsustainable and it became clear that the operation would not be able to continue.

Since its inception in early 2002, AANP estimates that it promoted more than 2,000 exhibitions, art forums and events, seven seasons of performances by area musicians, curated broadcasts on Amherst Media during the COVID 2020 spring, and produced a walkable “Windows Into Art” exhibit last fall featuring more than 90 artists in Amherst storefronts..

“The decision to dissolve the current operation was not an easy one,” said the governance committee. “Changes to the downtown landscape following COVID-19 as well as a lack of volunteer support meant continuing was not sustainable for the present team. However, change brings opportunity, and we look forward to seeing the next iteration of community arts events in downtown Amherst. We hope this creates space for a new vision to emerge, and encourage those with serious proposals to be in touch.”

Interested parties should email the AANP at [email protected] by the end of October.

We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation for your years of support. WIth your help, Amherst Arts Arts Night Plus became a beloved community event.

At the time of its dissolution, AANP venues included: Amherst History Museum, Burnett Gallery, Gallery A3, Amherst Visitors Center, Hope & Feathers Framing and Printing, Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst, Bistro 63/Monkey Bar, Amherst Cinema Arts Center, Emily Dickinson Museum, Jewish Community of Amherst Hall Gallery, Frost Library (Amherst College), Amherst Public Art Commission, UMass Museum of Contemporary Art, Bower Studio, Roseanne Helden & Sally Keely, Ramboll, Common Share Food Coop.
