Safe in the Sun Run 2026

Join us on April 26, 2026, 2pm at Ada Hayden Park in Ames, IA for our fourth annual 5K/10K run! www.cancerbucket.org

This annual event, hosted by the Cancer Bucket Foundation, takes place each May to raise awareness and funds for melanoma research. Founded in 2022, The Cancer Bucket Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding melanoma research and advancing efforts in skin cancer prevention. Through partnerships with leading medical experts and research organizations, the foundation supports innovative treatment options and raises awareness about the importance of early detection.

The funds from last year’s Safe in the Sun Run were donated to University of Iowa Health Care’s Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We are one month out from Safe in the Sun Run 2026.

Last year’s event was a huge success in raising funds for melanoma research and bringing awareness of melanoma to our community. We raised $15,000 to donate to University of Iowa Center for Advancement with funds targeted for melanoma research.

We are pleased to announce that our friends at William R Bliss Cancer Center will be back at Safe in the Sun Run this year, hosting free skin cancer screens for 5K/ 10K race participants.

Tents will be located near the race registration and packet pick up area. Thank you Bliss Cancer Center for giving our race participants this opportunity!

As May and Melanoma Awareness Month comes to a close, we reflect on a successful third annual Safe in the Sun Run.

We thank our sponsors, our participants (new and old!) and our volunteers for helping us raise again over $13,000 to be donated to the Holden Comprehensive Center at the University of Iowa, where cutting edge melanoma research is leading to advances in the medical management of melanoma.

We are working to not only raise research dollars, but also raise awareness and educate regarding early skin cancer detection and prevention. Thank you for being a large part of this mission with us.
