Next up is Hanoi Ragmen!!!

Hanoi Ragmen is an alternative rock band from Alexandria Virginia, playing at venues in the D.C metro area such as The Evening Star, The Pinch, The Birchmere, and Union Stage. Though their host of eclectic inspirations range from jazz to metal, with influences like Queens of the Stone Age, Herbie Hancock, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and The Doors, their goal when writing music is to not be bound by a specific genre - just to make something that has both depth, and accessibility, regardless of form.
About two years ago the band formed and began to write original music for a small EP which was recorded by Jack Kilby at Crab Shack Music, and produced by Tom Phillips of “While Heaven Wept” and Rick Irby. The current band lineup is as follows:

Gabe Harr: Rhythm guitar, lead vocals
Max Powell: Lead guitar, backup vocals
Beck Moniz: Bass, backup vocals
Shaan Shuster: Keyboard
Nathan Argust: Drums

They are currently in the process of writing new material and bettering the old to record a full length album this summer.

Meet Lacklustre!

Lacklustre, self described as “Northern Virginia’s Most Okayest Band”, brings a sound that blends their influences of Americana, Punk, Garage Rock, and Classic Country resulting in a mashup best described as, well, Rock & Roll. Relative newcomers on the Alexandria music scene, their shows combine original tracks with their rowdy interpretations of both well known and more obscure covers.
Lacklustre began as a brown liquor inspired conversation between band mates Tim Barnett and Gary Cantrell around the dying embers of a campfire in December 2014. For nearly three years, the “band” served merely as an excuse to gather friends at the neighborhood watering hole to debate such things as the proper length of s**g carpet and the appropriate barbarian scene that would adorn their band van once they stormed the scene.
While Tim and Gary were talking up their fictional band around the neighborhood, Sam Jones and James Barnes were actually making music and honing their skills in a local punk rock band. After the unfortunate and pre-mature breakup of their band, Sam and James, wanting to keep on rocking, reached out to Tim and Gary to join forces and finally bring Lacklustre from concept to reality.
Following three years of word-of-mouth promotion, Lacklustre made their much anticipated (but never expected) debut in November 2017 with a short 4-song set before a charged crowd at The No.9 Lounge. The lads managed to successfully clear the low bar that their name was designed to invoke and the crowd was left wanting more. Since the debut, the guys have not slowed down and can be frequently seen rocking their ever expanding set around Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood. You can follow them and check out their sound on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter: .

Everyone, meet FeelFree!

Formed in 2010 in Alexandria, VA on the outskirts of Washington D.C., FeelFree’s smooth sound incorporates hard hitting horn lines, tasteful guitar work, and memorable melodies. They independently released their third album "Define the Free" in July of 2018 after premiering their single "Lonely Life" with critically acclaimed Rootfire Cooperative. The album would go on to win Best Reggae Album of 2018 at Washington D.C.’s 31st annual Wammie Awards.
The roots of FeelFree were first laid in 2004 when Andrew Pfeiffer (vocals/guitar/trombone), Evan Hulehan (guitars/vocals/production), and Bryan Frank (drums) began playing music together while enrolled in George Washington Middle School in Alexandria, VA. After adding Garrett Clausen on bass/vocals/saxophone and Colin Cantfil on trumpet in 2010, FeelFree was officially formed. The band immediately began releasing songs on the internet over the course of 2010-2013 resulting in two albums worth of material: In The Hills (2012) and The Ebb Tide EP (2013). Word about FeelFree’s explosive live show began spreading throughout the mid-Atlantic region creating an underground buzz landing them on stages like D.C.’s 930 Club and Baltimore’s Soundstage among others.

Our 2nd installment of Meet The Bands features Jack Kilby and the Front Line!

Jack Kilby is a drummer, bandleader, and recording engineer from Alexandria, Virginia. His sextet, Jack Kilby and the Front Line, recently released their two volume debut album, ‘Love Is A Song Anyone Can Sing’ which won Washington D.C.’s 2019 Wammie Award for “Best Jazz Album” and charted as high as #2 on the NACC and RMR Top Jazz charts for over 17 weeks. "What Jack Kilby has managed to accomplish is release a work that caught my attention from the first note on track one and held it throughout all twenty-one songs. Kilby and his “ensemble" of musicians deliver a hard pounding at times, melodic at times and at all times wonderful collection of well-orchestrated work," Paul Wilson, Audiophile Review.

It's time to meet the bands! First up, RDGLDGRN!

With a distinctive Go-Go drumbeat native to Washington D.C. serving as the backbone, RDGLDGRN (pronounced RDGLDGRN) takes hip-hop infused punk and indie rock and forges a new sound that is both deeply rooted in DC’s sonic landscape, and transcends it.

Comprised of three members who identify as Red, Gold, and Green, RDGLDGRN began making music in their basement studio, drawing from a diverse pool of influences like Bob Marley, The Beatles, Chuck Brown, Vampire Weekend, Outkast, The Neptunes, and Bad Brains. The result, as HipHopDX put it, is band that melds both rap and rock “without falling short of either.”

RDGLDGRN initially gained widespread recognition after self-releasing the song, “I Love Lamp,” on YouTube, amassing over 100,000 views over just a few weeks and winning the attention of notable industry figures and tastemakers, including renowned producer Kevin Augunas, who signed the group to Fairfax Recordings and produced their debut album.

Recording that album would find them collaborating at length Dave Grohl, who not only shares a hometown with the group, but who decades before had recorded “Nevermind” with Nirvana in the same Sound City Studio where he would provide the drums for the entire RDGLDGRN LP.

The band also collaborated with the legendary genre-bending artist, producer, and designer, Pharrell Williams, who co-wrote and co-produced the standout track “Doing the Most,” which showcases the breadth of the group’s capabilities and their willingness to defy convention.

Along the way, RDGLDGRN have established themselves as a must-see live act, delivering eclectic and high-energy performances alongside Outkast, The Killers, Talib Kweli, 311 and AWOLNation. They’ve performed across the United States and Europe, playing the Irving Plaza in NYC, El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, Merriwether Post Pavilion in Maryland, Alexandra Palace in London, and Berlin Arena in Germany, as well as selling out U-Street Music Hall in front of their hometown DC crowd.

RDGLDGRN’s upcoming album promises an evolution in their sound as the group suffuses its genre-bending musicality with a sly wit, honesty, and truly global worldview. With their first single, “No Pixar,” RDGLDGRN confronts the trials of forging their own path and establishing their own sense of identity and morality—a move that not only has The Source calling RDGLDGRN “the rap game’s Disney,” but signals the band’s willingness to step into the void. Not content to be the product of their myriad influences, RDGLDGRN continues to stake their claim as the new musical vanguard.
