Situated on the front-facing wall of the gallery, Warmhole is the stumbling point for viewers as they enter the exhibition. Resembling traditional woven tapestries and rugs, the design reveals its true material upon closer examination. In the characteristic of Brent Owens’ work, the expected medium is neglected and reimagined.

Once the viewer’s eyes adjust to the complexity of the work, it becomes clear that the medium has been transformed, and the theme of “Fancy Feast” emerges through the decorative motifs. At the center of the work is an array of bagels radiating outwards. The inner perimeter and the outermost border reference the digestive tract, with floral detail embedded throughout and imagery relating to feasting like pigs in a blanket and bacon and eggs.

Together, these elements provide a subtle nod to the larger exhibition concept, equipping the viewer with a sense of what is to come.

After Party End Slice extends on the exhibition’s
recurring motif of white bread by integrating
elements directly derived from ancient Rome’s
visual culture. In the United States, white bread
is a stable food symbolizing familiarity, mass
production, and plainness.

This wall based sculpture, however, elevates the
simplicity of a slice of white bread to a different
level of complexity. The mouse, bones, fruit, and
leftover shells reference the Asàrotos òikos
mosaic now housed in the Gregoriano Profano
Museum in the Vatican City.

This mosaic originally adorned the dining room
floor of an aristocratic Roman villa and depicted
the scattered remains of a banquet. By
incorporating these visual elements, the work
echoes the exhibition’s broader theme of the
banquet.

At the same time, the sculpture
recontextualizes this historically elite symbol by
placing it onto a slice of white bread, contrasting
exclusivity with accessibility.

It’s Cool Until It’s Not is a non-functional functional object: a cooler representing a Roman sarcophagus.

The surface pattern references strigilated marble sarcophagi of 3rd-century Rome, and is a form of classical iconography associated with Roman aristocracy.

No longer serving its sepulchral purpose, this sculpture subverts tradition. As the medium changes from marble to maple wood, the function transforms from serving the elite to serving the middle class and assuming a mundane function.

Insulated and fitted with a spout, it was crafted for artistic and practical use. Owens re-contextualized the significance of this type of stylized sarcophagus into American society by rendering it familiar, accessible, and detached from class.

Created in 2014, A Hotdog Couple, Pineapple, and Looking Past The Present are represented as neon signs but are enshrouded with contradictions as a central metaphor.

While neon signs traditionally symbolize mass production, capitalism, and modernity, these works subvert those realities. Hand-carved from poplar wood, these works are intimate, unique, and deliberately dysfunctional.

Their identity as neon signs is suggested by the presence of the plug, yet they remain permanently unplugged. And when plugged in, nothing about the work changes. The source of power is transformed into a symbol of the absence of its function.

Fancy Feast by is now on view at Savage Wonderground Tribeca.

The gallery is transformed by 49 unique works that are unexpected and playful. Inspired by the cat food brand “Fancy Feast,” the exhibition uses humor and quiet cynicism to critique culture, class, and social norms.

Owen’s wooden sculptures of towels, neon signs, and food reimagine aspects of reality.

At the center of the gallery is a 24-foot banquet table covered in oversized wooden food that is both abundant and absurd.

The sculptures serve as a metaphor for social inequality, asking the question, “Who really has a seat at the table?”

It’s not the classic Italian sub you’ve ordered at the deli around the corner, but it is sold by the foot, freshly cut at Savage Wonderground Tribeca.

Stop by to place your order and walk away with your bite of our Fancy Feast. It doesn’t need a fridge and doesn’t attract ants!
