🌵 Dangerous Dan – Post Burn Dispatch

I made it back home safe from the Burn. It was a great time. I packed the right bike, but now I know I need an E-Bike. And at the same time? I think Burning Man should ban E-Bikes. They hand out instant gratification and cut out the work, and the work is half the point.

I rode the entire pentagon perimeter a couple times. Burning Man is a lot like RAGBRAI—long roads, wild camps, and people building a temporary world just to see what happens. I camped in the 515 district, Road I. Out there I learned you don’t get the Burn you want—you get the one you need.

I survived the whole week and never hit the meltdown everyone warns you about. The funny thing is, someone described Burning Man to me as 80,000 people playing the game Refuge. And yeah, that’s exactly how it felt. But I found good people, the kind that make the game worth playing.

The stuff people haul into the desert just to escape society blows my mind—structures, towers, mutant vehicles, bars, shrines, shade rigs. It’s chaos and genius smashed together.

And with the incident that happened out on the playa, I want everyone to know: I’m okay. I survived another one.

I’ve been meeting people that have been in my social circle out here in Reno that have been to the Burning Man… To put it in Iowa Vocabulary “your not going to see it all” sound like The Iowa State Fair… So I made a Bingo Card for the Burning Man… I can’t wait to check some of these Boxes

9 hour, 14 lane traffic jam after burning man festival, Nevada, USA.

In 2022, when more than 70,000 people departed Burning Man, they triggered a 9-hour traffic jam that stretched across the Nevada desert. Vehicles lined up in an astonishing 14 lanes along the temporary Gate Road, a dusty, multi-lane path carved across the playa. This gridlock became a powerful lens into the scale of the event’s “Exodus.”

Burning Man takes place in the Black Rock Desert, where after a week of art and performance, tens of thousands converge on a single exit route. Organizers use a method called "pulsing," allowing batches of cars to move forward at timed intervals, creating controlled progress. But when attendance peaks and conditions are ideal, pulses collapse into miles of standstill traffic.

By September 2022, widespread accounts and images confirmed the exodus had become a visual spectacle, so vast it looked nearly unreal. Though the system was intended to manage flow, the sheer number of vehicles overwhelmed it, producing an unforgettable scene of stillness under the desert sun.

That image remains more than a traffic jam. It is a snapshot of collective momentum hitting the limits that even freedom in the desert cannot escape.
