Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and fans of Tony Todd, who passed away on November 6th at the age of 69.
Todd cemented his place in genre history with his iconic portrayal of Daniel Robitaille, aka Candyman, in Bernard Rose’s 1992 film Candyman. The film, an Americanized take on Clive Barker’s work, blended supernatural horror with potent social commentary on themes of gentrification and racism. Standing at 6'5", Todd's commanding presence made him a memorable figure as the vengeful spirit of an African American artist who was lynched for his relationship with a white woman.
With a career spanning over 100 film and television credits, Todd’s contributions to the industry were vast. He had a notable recurring role on Boston Public and appeared in guest spots on shows like Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, The X-Files, Smallville, Psych, and 24. A prolific voice actor, Todd brought to life memorable characters such as The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Zoom in The Flash (The CW), and Venom in Spider-Man 2 for Insomniac’s PlayStation hit. He also starred in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead and became one of the few actors to appear in multiple Final Destination films, where his characters often met gruesome ends.
Tony Todd's legacy in film and television is secure, and his contributions to the horror genre, in particular, will never be forgotten.
