We want to honor our dear friend, Debra Fortess, who was co-founder, and served as Vice President /Treasurer and major sponsor of the New Mexico Dulcimer Association (NMDA). She was an advocate and a support to the Albuquerque and New Mexico community of dulcimer players, students and enthusiasts.
Apple Mountain Music, the only store in the region that supplied a wide variety of American and international folk instruments, was the hub for the music community. She hosted jam sessions, lessons, UNM Continuing Ed classes, workshops and concerts at her store. At our NMDA festivals, Debra maintained a store booth onsite with everything from picks to instruments for many instrument, especially mountain and hammered dulcimers accessories and supplies. Albuquerque is in a dulcimer desert, but Debra was instrumental in bringing both kinds of dulcimers into the music community.
Even beyond the closing of her store, she sold supplies, provided rental instruments, and supported the music community at large with her involvement in the ABQ Folk Fest and New Mexico Dulcimer Association.
There is so much more that we could say. Debra made it possible for many of us to learn and enjoy playing dulcimers, but most of all, she created a warm, inviting community where people came together to learn and laugh. Debra’s passing has left an emptiness in our lives, but she will live on in our music.
As posted by Harlow Pinson on the Albuquerque Celtic Music, Arts, Dance, and Sessions
page, “Debra is survived by her husband Larry, children and grandchildren, and Tucker, the Bichon Frisé dog who welcomed customers to the store. Debra was also a fine hammer dulcimer player and one of the founders of the New Mexico Dulcimer Festival.” And by her brother, Jesse Bruce, “Services are scheduled for March 27th at noon at St Michaels Episcopal church. Montano and about 6th Street.”
May God bless and comfort Debra and her family.
