Emma Farman doesn't have any lines in "Seussical Jr.," a musical based on the books of Dr. Seuss being staged this weekend at Bethlehem Middle School.

The eighth-grader's role as a mime is critical, however, as she silently draws other characters into her scene in the second act. Director Lindsay Dashew didn't cut her any slack during auditions, she said. No matter that the 14-year-old has Down syndrome.

"She earned her spot in the cast," Dashew said.

Natasha Permaul is a published author who's too young to drive to her first book signing.

A sophomore at Guilderland High School, 15-year-old Natasha penned the recently released children's book "Mister Karner Blue," which features the iconic Karner blue butterfly. It's published by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, and proceeds from its sales will support conservation efforts in the rare ecosystem, including restoration to preserve the habitat of the small blue butterfly that has been on the federal endangered species list for two decades.
