Welcome to 27 powers, the creative writing community hosted by me, Laurie Wagner. A published writer for over 25 years, and a teacher to thousands of students, I offer weekly writing classes in the Northern California Bay Area for beginning and well-seasoned women writers who gather in Alameda, and in Berkeley at Teahouse Studio. I also offer creative writing classes online through my e-course, Telling True Stories and in 2013, Straw into Gold . I also produce the 27 Powers Traveling Writer Series, which brings world-class poets and writers like Ellen Bass, Tony Hoagland, Stephen Dunn, Marie Howe, Dorianne Laux, Joe Millar, Deena Metzger and Philip Gerard to the San Francisco Bay Area to teach, to converse and tell stories. You know the feeling…you’ve been writing for years, filling pages, following the pen, letting the words come. And somewhere in those pages, there’s something. A story that wants more shape, a line that wants to become a poem.

This fall, we are offering two eight-week workshops built for the moment where you’re ready to take what’s raw and make it into something finished.

➡ One Small, True Thing: Beginning Memoir, with Tanya Shaffer

An introduction to shaping a short piece of memoir (up to 2000 words), with craft discussion, in-class writing, and structured feedback, for both newcomers to the form and experienced writers looking to go deeper. Over the course of eight weeks, Tanya will introduce you to a variety of shapes a memoir piece can take and walk you through the elements that make a story feel whole, including constructing a compelling central character on the page (usually a version of yourself); taking that character through a process of transformation, whether large or small; and selecting the key details that bring the story to life for the reader.

➡ From Wild Writing to Finished Poem, with Susan Vespoli

For the writer who suspects poems are hiding in their journal pages. Susan, the author of four poetry collections, built this class around her own process: writing wild then finding and shaping the poems from the raw words. Eight weeks of live Zoom writing sessions, weekly prompts (image poems, sensory poems, haiku, and more), and space to workshop your drafts on Wet Ink.

Both are small groups, both meet weekly, and both are designed to take you from the page you already have to the piece you didn't know you were ready to write.

Hope to see you soon!

What actually happens in a small group Wild Writing class?

We gather on Zoom. We read a poem. We write for 15 minutes without stopping. Then we read our work aloud to one another, and no one gives feedback.

That last part matters more than people expect. Being heard without being fixed is its own kind of medicine.

We keep the groups to no more than 8 writers. Classes start the week of September 14th and there is still room.

Dear Friends,

If you’ve been following my work for a while, you know that once a year I head to Kathmandu, Nepal, for a 10-day adventure in the Kathmandu Valley.

This will be my fifth trip to Kathmandu, alongside my good friend, James C Hopkins, a seasoned meditation teachers, story teller and world traveler. He is the best companion and this trip is probably the most generous and life changing trip I take all year. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the trips I get to take, but Nepal is a journey into another time and place.

In Nepal you will be lifted into an ancient world of vibrant color and eye popping street life; monastery bells, monks, artists and ordinary people going about their business in a buzz of humanity – a modern world built atop deep cultural roots that are alive in every corner of the Kathmandu Valley.

We will take 15 people with us in November, so if you’ve been eyeing this trip, now is the time to get in touch and let us know.

Wild Writing is a loose and intuitive practice. We use poetry as writing prompts and write as fast as we can, pen never leaving the page for 15 minutes at a time.

We write quickly to get past the perfectionist, past the part of the brain that likes to do things well.

What comes out is more honest and less performative. It is a practice that not only makes for writing real and true stories about our lives but also influences how we walk in the world.

I have seen lives change with Wild Writing.

Registration is open for our next round of small group Wild Writing classes.

You don't need much writing experience or to call yourself a writer. Honestly, if it has occurred to you to write at all in your life, this is a wonderful time to consider Wild Writing.

We start the week of September 14th and write together for ten weeks. Three classes, small groups, women I trust and love writing with leading each one.

Every story is made of moments. Small, luminous pieces of time where something lifts its head and asks to be seen. Our lives are rich with these moments. They arrive quietly. They don’t ask for effort or fixing — only that we slow down long enough to notice what’s here and let it touch us.

This is how we move through the world creatively: not by striving to make art, but by living in a way that allows our lives to become it.

Friends, Himalayan Writers Workshop invites you to join us in capturing the chaotic, crackling beauty of Nepal this coming November. During our 10-day exploration of Kathmandu and environs we will write intimate pieces which encapsulate our experience amid the beauty and energy of this Himalayan realm.

Please join us. It's going to be quite a journey! https://27powers.org/wild-writing-nepal/
