Welcome to 27 powers, the creative writing community hosted by me, Laurie Wagner. A published writer for over 25 years, and a teacher to thousands of students, I offer weekly writing classes in the Northern California Bay Area for beginning and well-seasoned women writers who gather in Alameda, and in Berkeley at Teahouse Studio. I also offer creative writing classes online through my e-course, Telling True Stories and in 2013, Straw into Gold . I also produce the 27 Powers Traveling Writer Series, which brings world-class poets and writers like Ellen Bass, Tony Hoagland, Stephen Dunn, Marie Howe, Dorianne Laux, Joe Millar, Deena Metzger and Philip Gerard to the San Francisco Bay Area to teach, to converse and tell stories. Things I’ve Memorized Trying to Stay Alive by Maria Giesbrecht

The menu at Bar George in Montréal, everything—
the apps, the cocktails, and even the wines,
how the Cabernet Franc is alphabetized
incorrectly. How to count money
like regrets. Five ways to escape
in high heels. How to fly fast without looking
like you’re running. The airport
code to every gorgeous city. Why flamingos
become pink. How to please. How to glow
in the dark—the curve of a Maserati’s
back seat, a ramp to a good life,
the charred cost of a future.

Moudi Sbeity won't ask you to look away from the hard things.

His poetry lives at the intersection of heartbreak and praise, war and wonder, grief and gratitude. It invites you into the parts of life we're taught to rush past — and shows you how they can crack us open instead of closing us down.

Join Moudi on Thursday, October 9 for a 90-minute class exploring the spirit of his work: how the pain of war in Lebanon became a doorway into mercy, tenderness, and awe. We'll talk together, then write two short pieces guided by him.

Come listen. Come write. Come home to what's real.

Why we're still going back to Nepal... https://27powers.org/wild-writing-nepal/

You're Invited!

27 Powers invites you into an intimate conversation with Lebanese poet, Moudi Sbeity, one of the most deeply reverent and thoughtful poets we’ve had the honor of knowing. Our time together will also celebrate the release of his debut poetry collection, Alhamdulillah Anyway.

Moudi grew up in Lebanon surrounded by grandmothers, cousins, and orchards of olive and fruit trees — steeped from the start in the richness of family, tradition, and land. His poetry weaves through language, homeland, and war, and ultimately the awakening of the human heart in the face of whatever life brings.

During this 90-minute class, we’ll talk with Moudi about the spirit of his work — how he’s used the heartbreak of war in Lebanon to crack open everything he knows about mercy, grace, and wonder. From that place, we’ll do two short guided writes together.
