E-Bike Field Tour | Exploring Zhuoxi Home Gardens and Satoyama Practices
In the face of extreme weather events and climate change, concepts such as "adaptability" and "resilience" are frequently discussed. Yet, how are these concepts translated into concrete, on-the-ground actions?
The socio-ecological production landscapes (SEPLs) nurtured by local Bunun elders in Zhuoxi offer profound insights. Through their traditional home gardens, we gain a unique opportunity to understand cropping systems that are deeply rooted in local environmental and social contexts.
Bunun elders have preserved an extraordinary diversity of crop varieties and landraces. They closely observe their surroundings, cleverly utilizing existing natural materials in the field—such as stones or crop residues from previous harvests—to support new plant growth. Year after year, these gardens are dynamically adjusted and renewed in harmony with the changing environment.
Since 2020, the Hualien Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency and the Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation have been promoting ecotourism and small-scale community economies. The goal is to preserve Bunun farming wisdom and the ecological functions of these crops within the broader landscape. Crucially, the initiative aims to safeguard and revitalize "in-situ conservation" and "on-farm seed conservation"—essential practices that are rapidly disappearing amidst the global wave of agricultural industrialization.
To celebrate the publication of the English editions of Entering Pisanglavan 1 & 2, we are partnering with a local youth group, Tana Culture, to host an immersive E-Bike Field Tour. Starting from Yuli and riding into Zhuoxi, we warmly invite international university students who are passionate about environmental sustainability, the Satoyama Initiative, and seed conservation cultures to join us. Together, we will explore the vibrant home gardens of the Qingshui, Zhuole, and Nan'an communities.
