「Hack」原先的意思是「創意程式設計」，而非「惡意闖入電腦」，「Hack Day」原身為
Yahoo! 內部的網路程式設計競賽，在比賽進行期間，工程人員放下手邊工作，唯一的任務便是絞盡腦汁提出新創意，Yahoo! 則供應美食、啤酒、邀請樂團演出，讓參與者在賣力 Hack 的同時，擁有充份娛樂，展現 Yahoo! 認真工作、盡情玩樂的精神。以往 HackDay 僅限內部工程師參加，但在網路開發業界引起廣泛討論後，Yahoo! 決定全面開放，邀請外部開發人員參加，五年來已陸續在美國加州、英國倫敦、印度邦加羅爾、巴西聖保羅、台灣等地舉辦，均引起開發者們廣大迴響。
