It's the perfect time to be a frog in Taiwan. 🌧️🐸

And if you can't manage that, the next best thing is to go meet some frogs.

On our night walk this weekend, the amphibians have been putting on quite a show. Swinhoe's frogs, Latouche's frogs, Fujian large-headed frogs, rice field frogs, Günther's frogs, ornate narrow-mouthed frogs, Asian common toads, Central Formosan toads, and temple tree frogs have all been out calling, feeding, and searching for mates.

Of course, when the frogs are active, other animals aren't far behind.

We found three red-banded snakes, perhaps searching for one of their favourite meals—toads. We also came across a beautifully posed bamboo pit viper.

Throughout the evening, the calls of mountain scops owls and collared scops owls echoed through the forest. High above us, we spotted a Formosan giant flying squirrel braving the rain, perhaps drawn out by a nearby fig tree in fruit.

After the walk ended and the guests had headed home, one final frog joined the night's species list. Calling from a nearby field was an olive frog. I never actually managed to see it, but after hearing it loud and clear at the very end of the evening, I think it deserves a spot on the list. 😆

Many people assume rainy weather means poor wildlife watching, but for many nocturnal animals, it's exactly the opposite.

If you don't mind a little rain, it's still a fantastic time to experience Taiwan's nocturnal wildlife.

This weekend at Nature Play Sessions, we somehow got the perfect weather ☀️✨

We had originally planned to go to the stream as we have been lately, but after heavy rain the day before, we shifted to the nearby pond so the water could settle. This often brings different kinds of observations and discoveries.

And this time, it did.

One of the quiet joys of outdoor education is returning to the same place again and again. We have been visiting this pond throughout the winter, actually for the last year. Across seasons and weather, the place slowly reveals its layers. We begin to notice its rhythms and changes more clearly, and build a deeper sense of connection over time.

A place becomes both teacher and friend—we learn from it through experience, and come to know it more deeply with each return.

At the pond, we saw how the small fish we once caught in winter had grown bigger and more numerous. Damselflies and dragonflies now danced over the water, and we even watched a male trying to interrupt another pair mid-flight. We discovered lots of bugs and snails, too!

But the highlight was the turtles 🐢
Today we saw a large red-eared slider (introduced species), and a small native striped-necked turtle. The smaller one was surprisingly easy to catch, so we were able to take a short close look before gently releasing it back into the water.

The stream is a favourite in summer, but the pond always offers a different richness of life.

Each visit seems to reveal something new, even in a place we know well.

Join us this summer!☀️

(Night Safari)!🐍🐸

Last night was our best night walk for adults (Night Safari) of the season so far! 🐍🐸

We spotted an incredible 11 snakes representing 5 species, along with 8 species of frogs and toads.

One of my favorite encounters of the night, though, was a large stag beetle (*Odontolabis siva*).

I was busy checking a spot where we often find tree snakes and nearly stepped on him when he suddenly appeared right in the middle of the trail. What an incredible creature. They’re very strong and can be handled carefully, though you do need to avoid getting pinched by those jaws.

We moved him off the trail a few times, but each time he stubbornly marched straight back to the middle 😆

In the end, we let him continue on his way. I hope he made it safely—maybe we’ll meet again someday.

Other highlights included lots of praying mantises, a couple of fireflies, bats, vinegaroons, and even a spider enjoying a stick insect for dinner 🕷️

And just when we thought the night couldn't get any better, a flying squirrel made an appearance near the end of the walk! 🌙

If this sounds like your kind of adventure, our next Adult Night Walk is on 6/20. We only run two public walks each month and keep groups small (maximum 5 participants).

Come see what we find next time! 🌿

A little late to share this one, but last weekend we took a few families along the Tianmu Historic Trail—and we were lucky enough to spot not one, but three snakes (all habus)! 🐍

It turned into a great opportunity to observe their behavior in the wild. In general, snakes tend to have two main responses when encountered: either they stay very still, hoping we don’t notice them, or they’ve already realized they’ve been seen and are moving away quickly. As long as we keep our distance and observe calmly, both situations allow for safe and respectful viewing.

There are a lot of misunderstandings about snakes, and first-hand experiences like this—guided and in a safe setting—really help both children and parents build a better understanding and appreciation of them.

We also came across plenty of other amazing creatures, including a tiny praying mantis, a stick insect perfectly camouflaged above us, a few giant millipedes still hanging around, and a very cool longhorn beetle… although the only photo we managed of that one is a selfie where it landed right on the camera lens (see last picture, haha).

Other highlights included a snake skin wrapped on a stick by the stream, and learning that crabs can glow under UV light, which helps spot them hiding in the mud. Pretty cool!

If you’d like to join us for the next adventure, we still have two spots available on 6/13.

Otherwise, feel free to check out the schedule and details below:

Today I joined fellow ecology teachers .tw (Johnson) and at Dahu Park to lead an ecology program for about 90 students and teachers from San-Min Junior High, along with a group of visiting students from Singapore 🌿

My part focused on biodiversity and why it matters.

I asked the students to imagine a city where only one person was responsible for collecting all the garbage. What happens if that person gets sick?

Ecosystems work in a similar way. Every species has a role to play, and when there is more biodiversity, there is often some overlap in those roles. If one species declines, others may be able to help keep the system functioning. The more biodiversity an ecosystem has, the more resilient it tends to be.

We also talked about invasive species, including red-eared sliders and pleco catfish (which my co-teachers brought for the students to meet). When biodiversity is low, invasive species often find opportunities to thrive. There may be fewer predators, less competition, or ecological "job openings" waiting to be filled.

A few students asked some great questions along the way. It was a pleasure spending the morning exploring ecology together. 🌿

Our recent hike at Dagouxi Creek focused on nature photography, a way for teens and older kids to slow down and connect more intentionally with the outdoors through careful observation. 📷 🌿

This trail was especially beautiful in the afternoon light, with sunlight filtering across mossy rocks, ferns, and the stream. It’s also a popular spot for hiking or cooling off in warmer weather, so it was a bit crowded that day 😂

One of my favorite parts was seeing how differently everyone photographed the same subject — small changes in angle or focus completely changed the feeling of the image.

By the time we reached the waterfall, everyone was ready to rest. Some took off their shoes and sat by the stream for a while, and the whole atmosphere became very relaxed and comfortable. We would have happily stayed longer, but we had to head back while there was still daylight. We should definitely go again sometime 😊

A lot of my background as an outdoor educator in the US was working with middle and high school students on longer hikes and backpacking trips, so I’ve always really enjoyed this age group. At this stage, outdoor experiences become about more than just learning about nature itself — teens are often ready for more independence and responsibility, and you naturally begin to see leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and social confidence emerge within the group dynamic.

Starting this fall, I’d love to build a small ongoing hiking/exploration group for older kids/teens (around 12–16) who want to meet more regularly for outdoor adventures and social connection 🌿

Rather than fixed “class themes,” I’d like the hikes to grow more organically from the group itself, with interests like nature observation, birds, plants, navigation, photography, geocaching, and outdoor leadership developing along the way.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to send me a message. We already have a few participants from past hikes who are in.
