Yesterday (6 March 2024) we hosted Assistant Professor Howard Chen at Science at the Bar!

Howard took us on a journey through space! He shared close up views of distant worlds (exoplanets, aka planets orbiting stars other than the sun), and he elaborated on the methods used for modelling these exoplanets - including his own research field using computer simulations. At the end of his talk he related his work to our daily lives: “How the exploration of exoplanets may affect our lives”.

A great and inspiring talk! Followed by questions regarding life outside our planet, (international) collaboration needs in this field, the Fulton vs Chen gap, and the difficulty of measuring “Planet Density” (by measuring Planet Mass & Planet Radius).

A big applause for Howard Chen! Thank you.

Hope to see everyone next Science at the Bar. If you are or know any suitable speakers, please reach out to us!

On 7 Dec we hosted our 10th Science at the Bar, with Mila Davids from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands!

Mila Davids is an Assistant Professor in the History of Technology research group at TU/e. She focuses on international knowledge transfer and the interplay between global knowledge circulation and societal and technological transitions.

One of her studies she discussed during her talk is on the semiconductors industry, in specific the historic relations of corporates Philips (Netherlands), TSMC (Taiwan) and ASML (Netherlands) - and its impact on current and future sustainability in semiconductors.

Mila Davids is "Embassy Science Fellow" related to our office (Netherlands Office Taipei) this year. If you are interested to talk with her about sustainability in the semiconductors industry - please feel free to reach out!

Next Science at the Bar will probably be held end Feb / early March, on the topic: Exoplanets..! Stay tuned.

Next Science at the Bar event on Thursday, 7 December 2023!

Speaker: dr. Mila Davids, Assistant Professor, Eindhoven University of Technology, on the topic "How History shapes Semiconductors Sustainability"

In dr. Mila Davids her talk, she will illustrate how important history is for the sustainable transformation of our society. For example, the current global entanglement of the semiconductor industry with centers of gravity like Taiwan's TSMC and the Netherlands' ASML is rooted in the 1980s.

We hosted our ninth Science at the Bar with Danny Hsu from Academia Sinica! Danny is vice-director at the Institute of Biological Chemistry of the academy. He and his colleagues were working on corona-viruses in cats when the COVID pandemic began. After that, they quickly pivoted to contribute to worldwide research on COVID-19.

They particularly helped in understanding the spike protein on the virus that helps grab hold of our body to infect our lungs, and how it coats itself in sugars to sometimes escape our immune system.

It was great to hold the hand-painted models of the virus and the spike protein in real life to get a feel for what the virus looks like. It wasn’t an easy task to explain a topic as complex as this to laymen, but Danny succeeded! We all went home a little bit more knowledgeable on a topic that has affected all our lives.

Stay with us for number 10! All suggestions for the next speaker are welcome!

Next Science at the Bar event on Wednesday 16 November, 2022.
Speaker: Dr. Shang-Te Danny Hsu, Research Fellow and Deputy Director at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Academia Sinica, on the topic "Game of Spike: the Saga of COVID-19"

Dr. Shang-Te Danny Hsu will take you through a journey to discover how the spike protein of Covid-19 looks like. He will answer questions such as: How does vaccination help boost our immune response to protect us from getting COVID-19? Why do mutations in the spike protein cause immunity escape? And more!

Happy to have hosted the eight Science at the Bar event, with another speaker from the Netherlands!!! Associate Professor Mucahid Mustafa Bayrak from the National Taiwan Normal University presented his research related to Sustainability and Indigenous communities. He started by answering the overall question “What is sustainability”, and followed by highlighting structural and non-structural measures to solve related challenges.

Furthermore, he shared some personal experiences based on research outcomes on an international level (IPCC) and on a local level. He concluded with a positive note that we are on a turning point in transforming the world in a different world all together, with more focus on renewable energy, more focus on local production, and more focus on changing the system.

I believe most people attending would be happy to be part of this transformation! Thank you for joining again - and hope to see you at next event. If you know any potential speakers, please let me know.
